A sharecropper – a strong, decent man, a natural leader, and a gifted farmer.
LOUELLA
Albert’s wife, hard-working, spirited, worn by farm life and wanting change.
LETTIE
Louella’s sister, sprightly, sexy and licking old wounds before she runs off to new adventures.
AUGUSTUS
Albert’s buddy just out of the Army. He drinks beer, talks a lot, and has a temper.
GRANNY
Louella’s grandmother, battered by age and illness, still sharp, assertive, cranky.
COOTER
Albert’s son, a smart kid who loves his papa, but wonders if there can be a future other than “cotton life.”
PREACHER TOM
A man with a quick tongue and lively instincts wearing a frayed and self-conscious piety.
HARDWAY
A cunning, meddlesome friend with a weakness for gambling and taking what he can.
JOHN TITTLE
Albert’s white landlord, a clever, excitable guy, who doesn’t know where he fits.
JAKE MATHIS
The town storekeeper, busy demonstrating the authority, wit, and importantce he is afraid he doesn’t really have.

A security guard with a chip on his shoulder. Handsome enough in a squirrelly tech-support kind of way. Should have a sly sense of humor.

MAGGIE
Middle forties, single’ Maggie runs a successful practice as a Pet Intuit. She is independent, strong willed and (with the exception of one bedroom in her apartment) extremely organized.

SARAH MEEKS
Lead. Early-Mid-30s. Disillusioned after two failed pregnancies. Travels to Prague in search of an antique toy. Strong singer-actress with extremely emotive voice. Soprano, A below to sus F Belt.
PETR KLIMES
The Toy Maker. Mid 30’s, a farmer and ex-mine worker, physically imposing but mild-mannered.
Baritone with a very wide range. A below to A above.
ANNA KLIMES
Petr’s wife. Mid thirties. A once strong woman who is losing faith and worn down by life. Mezzo with a strong belt.
JASON MEEKS
Sarah’s husband. Distant. Always wanted children. Lyric Baritone with strong bottom and able to float a high A natural.
DOBY
A mischievous, intelligent Czech street urchin. Must have great comic timing and learn a believable Czech accent. Play believable 16. Must sing VERY well, with ability to riff in a Rock belt to Bb.
CAPEK
A simple boy, orphaned, who assists Petr with his toy making. Must play a believable 14. Must sing very well and have a comfortable high A.
JOHANNA
60s. A puppeteer in Germany . Passionate to the point of eccentricity. Mezzo.
UTA
Authentic German accent. Once a Matron of Ravensbruck. Nearly blind. Must play believable 80s. Strong character Alto with very rich tones.
YOUNG JOHANNA
Must play believable teen. Warm, inviting quality. Bird-soprano, with a lilting quality.
CAPEK LISKA
Man to play believable 70-80S. Must learn to speak realistic Czech. Strong singer who emerges from the company to step into this role.
