MUSICAL CHAIRS is a play in 5 acts premiering at NY THEATER FESTIVAL. It runs about 85 minutes.
SYNOPSIS: It takes place in four chairs of an undisclosed metropolitan theater, where two sets of subscribers - each dealing with different marital problems - experience their lives colliding together over a season of touring Broadway musicals and reemerge in a new paradigm. Tory and Nadine just moved to town and are new theater subscribers whose marriage is collapsing as Tory realizes he’s gay, and Nadine is desperate, yet helpless, to save it. Bernie and Violet, longtime subscribers, separated to see if there is something more to their lives, but Bernie regrets the separation now that his girlfriend, Ginger, is expecting a child he never wanted. Characters are inspired by musical theater archetypes, but these are three-dimensional people, mirroring the audience. Although there is comedy, there is nothing camp nor broad, in the acting. It needs to be real. We are not looking for a character; we are looking for YOU.
There is one musical number as the finale, however: we ARE NOT looking for the best singers and dancers, except for the role of Ginger.
NADINE LOVETT: 34, Female/female presenting. Any race/ethnicity, Tall. A Melanie Lynskey type. Mother of two young sons, Tory is the only man she ever dated since sophomore year of college. She hides behind too much makeup, keeps her appearance professional yet artsy. Only attracted to gay men. “A Fruit Fly.” Eats her feelings away. Was involved in theater in high school and now is obsessed with musicals, be it on TV, or live theater. Judy Garland and Shirley Temple are some of her favorites.
TORY LOVETT: 34, but looks younger. Male/male presenting. Any race/ethnicity. Shorter with a slight yet athletic build. Father of two. Teaches architecture history at the local university. Sexually repressed, now questioning his sexuality. Musical theater expert and the limit of his interests. Never had sex with a man though burning to have some. Intimidated by physical contact. Inspired by the lovesick tenor archetype. Has “The Gay Face,” Impishly youthful appearance. Perhaps a young Andrew Lloyd Webber or Daniel Radcliffe type. Meticulous dapper dresser.
GINGER: 20s, Female/female presenting. Any race/ethnicity, Dancer, Bernie’s girlfriend. Was a ballet dancer but became Vegas showgirl for more money to help her father when he got sick. Quite compassionate. Sees the good in people. Inspired by airy, helpless characters (Heddy LaRue and Miss Adelaide) but she is a full person, not just a character. Currently 8 months pregnant. Note: Will also be dance captain.
VIOLET HYMAN: 40s, Female/female presenting, Any race/ethnicity, Bernie’s estranged wife, Southern, Close friend of Pablo, successful interior designer, inspired by the wise matron archetype. Separated from Bernie. Unable to have kids but that doesn’t mean she never wanted them. Befriends Nadine. Understands the history of marriage in humanity.
PABLO VERRIDA: 30s, Male/male presenting. Latino, Adonis. Confident in his sexuality. Passionate and loving. Sees beyond societal norms. Inspired by Nicky Arnstein, holds a Ph.D.in philosophy and teaches at the local university. Close friends with Violet. Originally from Venezuela. Has had gay relationships in the past, but deeper sparks fly when meeting Tory.
