Delightful story of a girl and the guardian angels who come to teach her about finding true love. The hilarious action takes place in a laundromat during the sensational 60s, and the show is loaded with good clean fun and bubbling energy. Over 50 favorites from the 60s, including “Where the Boys Are, “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’, “Respect, “I Feel Good” and “Do You Want to Know a Secret?

Cindy:

Sweet, personable, possibly gawky girl. Impressionable, and by turns optimistic and depressed, she grows in confidence as the play concludes. Probably wears aponytail. Strong alto and sweet-sounding mix. Low F; belt to Bb; easy mix to D. Sings sweetly (Where The Boys Are, End of the World, Walk On By”), but also in a low range (These Boots Are Made For Walkin'). Should be able to belt out Town Without Pity” (to Bb). Her Act I finale solo, “I Don't Wanna Be A Loser”, goes from a sweet, wistful soft ballad to a big belt.

Marge:

A tough cookie. Larger-than-life, brassy redhead with a sharp tongue and a heart of gold. Flashy dresser. Probably in a sexy top, capris and high heels. Strong, controlled pop/rock belt, tough R&B “wail”, plus nice mix for backup. Solos include "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me" (Dusty Springfield; belt to C#), "Respect" (Aretha Franklin; R&B to F) and "Our Day Will Come" (nice mix to C).

Dee Dee:

Perky and overly enthusiastic; eternal optimist. Fairly manic cross between Sandra Dee and "That Girl". Means well, but is liable to wreak havoc at any given time. A big flip hairdo. Typically 60s pointy bra (at one point referred to as "bullet bra"). Lovely, slightly dressy, very well put-together look (a well-dressed Connie Francis). Strong pop alto with a strong belt, plus nice mix for backup. Solos include "I Will Follow Him" (low G to D, belt or strong mix) and "Today I Met The Boy" (belt or strong mix to Eb).

Everybody Else:

Multi-character track for one male actor. Plays Johnny Angel, Mrs. Halo, Postman, Mr. Right, Washer Repairman and Milt Dudman. Pop tenor with some falsetto and bass notes. Sings sweet solo (Wonderful Wonderful) up to G (can be falsetto), "I Know A Place" (finale; must belt strong F). Sings "I Feel Good" (James Brown) and "Secret Agent Man" (Johnny Rivers). Falsetto backups in "Tell Him" to Bb. Bass backups in "I Will Follow Him" to A below middle C. In "Mr. Postman", should be comfortable with a strong pop sound to Gb.

THE 39 STEPS Adapted by Patrick Barlow from the novel by John Buchan, Alfred Hitchcock film and original concept by Simon Corble and Nobby Dimon. Dir: Guy Stroman. 1st reh: 9/4. Runs 9/18–30. All roles available.
