St. Petersburg, 1992: the Soviet Union has collapsed, McDonald’s has risen, and Evgeny, a young man at a loss, stumbles into a job working surveillance with his old friend Dmitri. Their target: Katya, a former pop singer with questionable allegiances and a mysterious past. As their lives riotously intertwine, Evgeny finds himself falling in love and losing his bearings, all while grappling with the taste of freedom (and fast food) along the way. Lauren Yee’s (Cambodian Rock Band, The Great Leap) savvy, off-kilter tale of identity, espionage, and the cost of capitalism makes its New York premiere in this razor-sharp dark comedy.
Note: The characters in this play are Russian. The actors portraying these characters may not be. Age is very flexible, especially for Evgeny, Dmitri, and Mother Russia. Feel free to embrace the heightened spirit of the show.
Within the frame of the play, Evgeny, Dmitri, and Katya speak in standard American accents (to signify they are speaking Russian). Mother Russia (who exists outside this frame) speaks with a Russian accent.
EVGENY: Male [25]. Russian. Sheltered, hapless son of the Soviet privilege machine, now left to fend for himself in post-USSR St. Petersburg. Desperate for his powerful father’s approval.
DMITRI: Male [25]. Russian. Wannabe alpha male with a hidden sensitive side. All bark, very little bite. Former aspiring KGB agent who’s now pivoted to starting his own surveillance company. Thinks capitalism will be his big shot.
KATYA: Female [30s]. Russian. Former rebel and activist searching for purpose and meaning. A famous singer who defected to the U.S. Now back in Russia and working as a schoolteacher.
MOTHER RUSSIA: Female [50+/ageless]. No-bullshit, effortlessly charming, seen-it-all energy. The embodiment of the soul of Russia.
