SYNOPSIS: It’s the 10th century! A plague rages on in Germany! Everyone is turning into foam! When two hermits find an orphan named Mary, they scheme a saintly rescue mission to protect her purity at any and all costs. Mary, however, has other plans for herself. An adventurous and absurd new adaptation of Hrotsvitha of Gandersheim’s 10th century closet drama comedy Abraham, or the Rise and Repentance of Mary.

We encourage actors who identify as female, non-binary, trans and gender-variant to audition. All actors should be imaginative, language-oriented collaborators who enjoy working in a physical style.

SEEKING:

ABRAHAM/AS CAST. 30s. Maker of schemes, an overly imaginative mind with enough control to reign his big ideas into big action. Talkative. Socially adept enough to avoid the severe punishment he would face were anyone to expose the extent to which he does not follow the abbey’s rules. Grieving, though he’d never admit it.

EPHRAIM/AS CAST. 30s. A hermit, and former orphan. A little paranoid. Existentially curious, and more desirous than even he understands. Dedicated to Abraham, and his many sinful schemes. Still waiting for God to speak directly to him. Tender to the abbey’s lavender garden.

SOLDIER/AS CAST. 20s-30s. A soldier, who travels either on foot or by horse to conquer lands he has no business conquering. Friend of Abraham’s, from when Abraham was a soldier. A scaredy cat, but only because he’s deeply empathetic. A certain swagger. Non-threatening flirt, but still a flirt. LGBTQ+ are encouraged to audition.

MASTER OF THE INN/OTHERS/AS CAST. 30s-40s. Doubles as THE MASTER OF THE INN in a rural medieval town, and manager of its restaurant. He serves meat; eat up! Schemes nefariously. Not someone you want to be stuck in an elevator with; THE LOVERS. Mary’s visitors; and A GRAVEDIGGER post-plague. Business is booming, but will he catch whatever’s causing all this death?

MARY/AS CAST. [THIS ROLE IS CAST] Seeking an actor 18+ to play an optimistic young orphan, seen between the ages of 8 and 15. Mary is kidnapped by a hermit after her parents die in a plague. Grieving, but good. A robust, imaginative mind. If she were born in this century, she’d be a stand-up comedian.
