Preparation Instructions:

Audition slots are FIVE (5) minutes long. Each actor has TWO (2) minutes to perform. Please prepare appropriate material of your choosing, which may be from one or more of the season’s shows. Scripts, a reader, and an accompanist will be provided at the audition. Please be prepared to state your starting & stopping places. You may audition for one or more roles in the season. There are no auditions sides.

If singing, please bring sheet music. Please bring a headshot & resume to the audition, stapled together.

MISS MARY, Thirty going on sixty, African-American, female. The owner of the beauty shop/boarding house, widow, lost her husband during WWII.

MABEL, Early 20s, African-American, female. From Chattanooga, loose, wild woman searching for adventure on the streets of Memphis. Taffy’s older sister.

LEANNE, Early 20s, African-American, female. Mockingly nicknamed the ‘beauty queen from Texas,’ she passionately awaits letters from her lover Bobby, who’s fighting overseas. Her depressed moods cast a shroud over the otherwise lively beauty shop. Also voices Curlin’ Curlin’.

BUZZ, Mid 20s, African-American, male. A businessman/postman who could not fight in the war because of his bum leg.

DOT, 30s-40s, African-American, female. Round as a dot, a loyal customer to ‘Miss Mary’s Press and Curl.’

JACKIE, 30s-40s, African-American, female. Skinny as a stick, yet another loyal customer. Dot’s best friend.

GLADYS, Early 20s, African-American, female. A churchgoing girl from Birmingham, an aspiring writer.

BOBBY, Mid 20s – Early 30s, African-American, male. The dashing soldier, Leanne’s long-lost lover.

BLACK STACHE: Famous for his face foliage, heartless and hirsute, suspiciously well read, partial to the poetical and theatrical, and given to a ferocity from which no good shall ever spring.

MOLLY: 20s, female, A true leader, curious, intelligent, 13-year-old kid.

BOY: 20s, male, An orphan, a survivor, nameless, homeless, friendless who will become a hero.

GREMPKIN/MACK/SANCHEZ/FIGHTING PRAWN, mean schoolteacher, a very bad sailor, a hard-working Spanish pirate, and King of the Mollusks with a mastery of Italian wine and cuisine.

MRS. BUMBRAKE/TEACHER: Molly’s nanny, British to the bone. Stiff in the lip, loose in the hip, fun on a ship, also plays a knowledgeable mermaid.

SLANK/HAWKING CLAM: The Neverland’s vicious captain without the skill or quality to lead anyone but himself and always into disaster. Also, plays heir to the Royal Clam Clan.

SMEE, First mate to Black Stache. Single-mindedly dedicated to his captain’s every whim.

PRENTISS, an orphan, ambitious, hyper articulate, logical; yearns to be a leader. A little bit of a blowhard with just the teeny-tiniest touch of cowardice.

ALF, An old sea dog. Something about him appeals to the feminine sensibility – might be his bow legs, his saucy gait, or his kind heart.

LORD ASTER, The very model of a Victorian English gentleman, loyal subject to the Queen, devoted father, faithful friend.

CAPTAIN SCOTT, Captain of Britain’s fastest frigate, the Wasp.

TED, An orphan, obsessed with food, a natural actor, an easy wit, perhaps a future poet. Called “Tubby” but not due to girth, of which orphans, given their meager diets, have very little indeed.

All actors serve variously as sailors, seamen, seafarers, orphans, pirates, and Mollusk natives.
