"Locomotion" is a Kennedy Center commission that had its world premier at the Kennedy Center in the fall of 2010. It is now set to tour the U.S. for 14 weeks, from Florida to California, Texas to New York. The play tells the story of Lonnie Collins Motion, who has so much kinetic energy that his nickname, Locomotion, is perfect. He’s seen a lot of sadness in his young life. But when he discovers a passion for writing poetry, Lonnie finally finds a way to express his feelings about his family, the fire that took his parents away, his little sister, and his world.
