Please prepare a brief musical theatre or gospel song showing range. Bring sheet music in the correct key; an accompanist will be provided, but may not transpose.

Please bring a photo and resume, stapled back-to-back.

  • One role (Boyd McGowan) has not been offered, and is available.
  • Offers for three roles (Ida Mae, Isaiah and Ornella) are out, but have not been accepted yet. Therefore, the roles remain officially available. Check notice again for casting-status updates on these three roles.
  • Three roles (Jonas, Marla and Sam) have been cast (offers accepted).

Seeking:

Boyd McGowan:

AVAILABLE ROLE. Caucasian boy, age 9-12. Marla's son. Wise beyond his years. Longs to escape the mundaneness of small-town Kansas. Disabled by a car accident; uses crutches. His faith is unwavering, and he believes that G-d (through Jonas) will heal him when the time is right. Must have a clear, pure voice with lots of control and be able to belt to a high Eb.

Isaiah Sturdevant:

OFFER OUT; ROLE STILL AVAILABLE; CHECK NOTICE AGAIN FOR CASTING-STATUS UPDATE. African American man, 20s. Ida Mae's son. Young, charismatic by-the-books seminary student who’s short on experience and long on passion. A natural leader. Must have a terrific tenor voice. This character was previously named Ricky.

Ornella:

OFFER OUT; ROLE STILL AVAILABLE; CHECK NOTICE AGAIN FOR CASTING-STATUS UPDATE. African American woman, late 20s – early 30s. Part of the Angel choir, and longs to be a star. Must have a thrilling gospel singing voice with wide range.

The following roles are cast. Auditioning performers will be considered as possible (emergency) replacements, should any become necessary.

Jonas Nightingale:

CAST (Raul Esparza). Caucasian man, 30s-40s. Fast-talking, charismatic phony evangelist. A showman in every sense of the word. Terrific rock/gospel voice and comedic chops. LEAD.

Marla McGowan:

CAST (Jessica Phillips). Caucasian woman, 30s. Hardworking waitress and devoted single mother. Extremely protective of her son. Often puts up a tough exterior that allows her to push on while protecting her own heart. Role requires a great voice with a pop belt, and comedic ability. This character was previously named Marva. LEAD.

Sam:

CAST (Kendra Kassebaum). Caucasian woman, 20s-30s. Jonas’s younger sister and second-in-command. The voice of reason behind Jonas’s flamboyant ministry, and an excellent businesswoman, stage manager and producer. Fiercely loyal to her brother, and willing to do anything to protect him. Role requires a great voice with a pop belt, and comedic ability.

Ida Mae Sturdevant:

Update, posted 1.20.12: Role previously listed as available is now CAST (Kecia Lewis-Evans). African American woman, 40s-60s. Leader of the Angels of Mercy. Proud mother who believes in doing what it takes to send her son to Bible college. Tender but strong soul who has lived a hard life and must keep moving forward to survive. Must have a thrilling voice full of soul.
