| Breakdown
Norman Lee (must play 17 years old / Asian American Male): Average Asian American teenager who has a passion for hip hop. Good sense of humor, very likeable. Not rich, but also not poor. Grew up middle class suburbs and now has been dropped into the very urban setting of Brooklyn Chinatown. More hipster than hip-hop, the journey of the play revolves around his assimilation into Brooklyn. Excellent actor, pop/R&B singer and an excellent B-Boy. 18 years old or older to play 17. Jeanie Lee (Mid-Late 40’s/Asian American Female): Norman’s Mom. Asian American. A college graduate and single mother, she is smart, cool, well put together and determined. She loves her son immensely and is willing to do anything for him. She’s the type of mother who treats her child as a “best friend”, not someone who shovels rules on them. She’s worked hard to find a life away from her old neighborhood and is now torn-up that she’s back. Excellent actress, phenomenal belt singer, must move very well Lloyd Chinn aka Sir Master Cert (Mid- Late 40’s/Asian American Male): The show’s narrator, Jeanie’s old High School friend, and Norman’s b-boy teacher. He shows two faces in the show. One as the boisterous, ultra-confidant, smooth-talking MC of the stage reminiscent of a trash-talking Deion Sanders (street or jive talking); the other personality is a Mr. Miyagi character complete with a Chinese accent (He only shows this character whenever Jeanie is present). He loves hip-hop, respects the history of it, connects with it like it’s a member of his family. Excellent actor with comic timing, excellent rapper, singer and hip hop dancer of all styles from the 80s to the present. Extremely likable and charming. Sweet Cindy Chang (must play 16 years old / Asian American Female): Norman’s love interest. Smart, sexy, and smooth, very fine looking, the epitome of cool. A politically minded, strong-willed spoken word artist, isn’t afraid to put a person in their place if they say something that offends her. Excellent actress, must be able to slam poetry convincingly, excellent singer, able to hip hop dance well. Actor may be older that 18 but must convincingly play 16. Wingnut (must play 16-17 years old /Asian American Male): Norman’s brash and fast-talking best friend in Brooklyn. He’s the kinda guy who’ll spit game at any lady he thinks willing to listen, he’ll unabashedly dance in public whenever he’s got his headphones bumpin, and he thinks Brooklyn is the best damn place in the world. Wingnut is Norman’s hypeman, the Scrappy Doo to Norman’s Scooby Doo. Excellent actor with comic timing, ensemble singer, excellent rapper and an excellent B-Boy. Actor may be older that 18 but must convincingly play 16-17. Three-point (must play 18 years old /Asian American Male): The big bad. The big dog. An ultra confident b-boy – the champion of the yard. When he speaks, people listen. He knows he’s badder, sexier, and smoother than everyone around him. He’s muscular and a bit intimidating. No one has ever dared challenge him before Norman arrived. Perceived as Cindy Chang’s boyrfriend. Must act well, sing well and be an excellent B-Boy who can do flashy hip hop tricks. Actor may be older that 18 but must convincingly play 18. Hype (must play 18 years old/Asian American Male): The Hype-man, part of Three-Point’s crew. A young Asian American ”Flava Flav”. A loud-mouth, in-your-face b-boy with a very big bark, but very little bite. He’s like the little cartoon dog that likes to pick fights because he knows he’s traveling with the big dogs. He’s legitimately not intimidated by anyone. Excellent B-Boy and ensemble singer. Actor may be older that 18 but must convincingly play 18. Moe Moko (must play 16-17 years old /Asian American Female): Sweet Cindy Chang’s BFF. A cutesy Japan-o-phile teenager who looks like she is straight out of Final Fantasy. Has a Japanese accent even though she was neither born nor raised in Japan. She’s hot and knows it. She has a soft spot for bad boys. Good comic timing, ensemble singer and dances hip hop well. Actor may be older that 18 but must convincingly play 16-17. Junior (must play Early teens/ Asian American Male ): Wingnut’s little brother. A young genius. Though he speaks with a maturity uncommon to those around him, he’s still a very young teenager and still loves everything a young teenager would enjoy like video games and comic books. His intelligence also expands to his dance abilities as he can pick up dance moves extremely fast. Good actor, ensemble singer and B-Boy dancer. LA aka Lil Assassin (must play 18 years old /Asian American Male): Three-Point’s crew enforcer. Muscled and stocky. A man of few words, he’s the fella that intimidates by size. He’s the cat you don’t want to see in the middle of an alleyway at night. He likes getting physical whether that means dancing hard or beating someone down. Excellent B-Boy and ensemble singer. Actor may be older that 18 but must convincingly play 18.
