This play is a sequel to Mr. Dudzick’s Over the Tavern, and finds the Pazinski family ten years later. The play takes place in an urban Buffalo neighborhood on the eve of the moon landing in the summer of 1969. The moon landing, civil rights and Vietnam are very much the backdrop for this play, but the story is a very personal one that unfolds in the family’s backyard. The world is taking giant leaps, while the Pazinski’s each take one small step.
Rudy Pazinski:
22. Son of Ellen. The baby of the family, he’s come home from studying to be a priest. At the top of the play his hair is shaggy, he is smeared with dirt and smells of tear gas - having just spent a few days with some war protesters. He is grappling with leaving the priesthood, and eventually does make that decision. He is charismatic, sweet, funny, can command a room and has a dead-on Ed Sullivan imitation. He is the prodigal son.
Eddie Pazinski:
25. Ellen’s middle son, Eddie’s number is up, and has just finished basic training in preparation for his tour in Vietnam. Tall, strong, muscular and good-looking, Eddie is newly married and is about to be a father. He’s a product of his urban, Polish American environment. Not the brightest, but a really wonderful guy.
Annie:
26. Ellen’s oldest child, Annie is her mother’s daughter. Though very gentle and loving, she has a fire in her. Wicked sense of humor. Annie married young, and is having to face the reality that it will not last ‘til death. Her faith makes that reality a very difficult one.
Maureen Blake:
26. The most recent Mrs. Pazinski, Maureen and Eddie are newlyweds and are expecting the first in a new generation of Pazinskis. She was, however, the high school slut, and proudly earned her nickname, “Easy Make Blake.” Brassy. No shame. Very funny.
The following roles have been cast. Auditioning performers will be considered as possible replacements, should any become necessary.
Ellen Pazinski:
CAST. Early 50s. A no-nonsense Catholic, Polish American woman, now widowed. She is the matriarch of the Pazinski family and both lives above and runs the family business; a tavern.
Georgie Pazinski:
CAST. 23. Georgie is mentally retarded. Has the mental and emotional age of about 5. A sweet young man in generally good spirits, he communicates with noises and gestures.
Walter Fronzak:
CAST. Late 50s. Walter is a long-time family friend. He is a nondescript, benign and friendly presence. Like an uncle to the Pazinsky children, so imagine their surprise when they find out he and their mother have been having a love affair and plan to marry.
