Breakdown

JESSE BRYANT
Mid-30s, African-American male.
Quick witted. Sensitive inside, but also quite willful and protective of his independence. Can take a punch. Wants to “come out” to his family regarding Kristian, but there are conflicts in the family - and within himself. He was given the name of his late father, the Rev Jesse Bryant Sr., but has managed to escape the geographic binds of his family to live the free life of a secular gay man in New York. However, there are family ties within him that he has yet to truly unravel. On the cusp of becoming a truly free man who is able to love and be loved without shame or ambivalence, but must confront and resolve some internal conflicts.

KRISTIAN SILBORN
Mid-30s, Swedish male. Caucasian.
Jesse’s partner from Sweden, has lived with Jesse in NYC for several years. Soft-spoken with a fire inside. Observant. An anthropologist. Intelligent. Religious Lutheran. Chatty. Disarmingly friendly. Has a clear idea of how things should go based on some high political and religious ideals. He’s better at analyzing others than himself.

EVY BRYANT JEROME
Late 30s-40+ African American woman.
Regal, organized, controlling. Her hard exterior masks a desire to be close to her family, Jesse in particular. Very much the Reverend’s daughter, she is religious and blindly adoring of their late father. She has taken on both the Matriarchal and the Patriarchal roles of the family, and fulfils this obligation with a sense of gravitas and martyrdom that has the rest of her siblings rolling their eyes. IS REGAL AND STRONG, BUT ALSO BUSTS OUT WITH A WISECRACKING REALNESS WHEN PLAYING CARDS AND HAVING FUN. Evy softens by the end.

NINA COLE
30-something African-American female.
Sassy. Brassy, Tells it like it is. Lesbian, and very free and open about it. Very smart and witty and loves to verbally spar and test the boundaries. A natural provocateur and performer, who probably hides some doubt and loneliness behind a dazzlingly fun exterior. A lifelong friend to the Bryant siblings, and has a deep love and affection for Jesse. For Evy’s benefit, she can keep things fun and light, and be less the urban truth teller that she is.

RONNIE HAHN
Light-skinned/mixed, 30-something female.
Classy. Intelligent. Agnostic. Been living in Europe for more than half her life. She has a sophisticated, worldly, beautiful way about her, but also a real temper. She drinks like she’s in an Edward Albee play to keep her pain numbed. Unfortunately, her drinking ultimately releases a torrent of repressed anger and resentment that is directed at Evy. She is the half-sibling to the Bryants, with a shared father but a different (white) mother, a product of their father’s secret affair. She has come to the wedding to break her isolation from the family and re-connect after many years.
