BREAKDOWN

NIKKI
20, person of color, She/Her/Hers. Wallflower, into comics. She's quiet but clocks everything. Over the course of the class, she begins to find her strength and her boldness catapults her to danger.

BRANDI
21, White, She/Her/Hers. VP of the sorority - the workshop was her idea. She got a black belt in Karate to make sure she never feels vulnerable again and she's desperate to Empower.These. Women.

KARA
21, any race/ethnicity, She/Her/Hers. Sisterhood chair of the sorority. While Brandi may think she’s the alpha in this friendship, she’s wrong. Kara observes everything, though she may deflect it with humor and cool. You just might believe her when she says she doesn’t care. Susannah (the sorority sister who was assaulted) is her best friend.

EGGO
20, person of color, He/Him/His. Mostly an introvert, but when he does extrovert, he’s incisive and passionate. He knows there is a sexual creature inside of him and is motivated by desire to be loved. By anyone, really. He is constantly getting rejected by women and that hurts like hell. He joined the frat to have friends, they’re ok I guess – but it’s nice to have people think he’s funny.

Part of the 43rd Humana Festival of New American Plays. Brandi is leading a women’s self-defense class in response to a fraternity brother assaulting one of her sorority sisters. Joined by two male students who show up in support, Brandi’s peers learn how to fight back, while wrestling with their own complicated experiences and desires. But how much can a class actually teach them about protecting themselves—and asking for what they want? Visceral and provocative, How to Defend Yourself examines the impact of rape culture, on campus and beyond.
