A note about casting (adopted from language with consent originally created by Kevin Kantor and Emily Trarquin of Actors Theatre of Louisville):

Most characters we encounter currently are on the binary and are written with he/him or she/her pronouns and you will see that in the following character descriptions. However limiting the descriptions are, our casting seeks to be inclusive as possible and we invite gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender, and non-binary actors to submit for the roles they most identify with. We will also list race/ethnicity when specific to the character but are otherwise seeking all races and ethnicities. Please let us know if you have any questions, concerns, or if there are any accommodations we can provide.

GYPSY

DIRECTOR NOTE:

This production of GYPSY at the Marriott will delve into the high and lows of chasing celebrity and the need to be seen. We're looking for a dynamic cast who can bring the shine of the characters to the stage, but also drop into the darker realities of the story.

INTIMACY NOTE:

Gypsy deals with content relating to the objectification of women, stylized burlesque choreography and exotic dancing, provocative costuming the removal of costume pieces on stage in a suggestive manner.

The female ensemble may be wearing provocative costumes.

The roles of Tessie, Mazeppa and Electra may require suggestive dancing, minimal costumes, and the removal of clothing pieces.

The role of Louise may require burlesque style stripping in a tasteful and mysterious way, partial nudity may be required.

SEEKING:

Mama Rose: Strong Mezzo/Alto with good low notes and belt. 40 - 55. The ultimate stage mother. Lives her life vicariously through her two daughters, whom she's put into show business. She is loud, brash, pushy and single- minded, but at times can be doting and charming. She is holding down demons of her own that she is afraid to face. Comic timing.

Baby June: Mezzo, age 9-10, Young Performer. A Shirley Temple-like up-and-coming vaudeville star, and Madam Rose's youngest daughter. Her onstage demeanor is sugary-sweet, cute, precocious and adorable to the nth degree. An adorable character - Mama Rose's shining star. Strong singer, strong dancer.

Young Louise: Mezzo, about 12, Young Performer. She is Madam Rose's brow-beaten oldest daughter and has always played second fiddle to her baby sister. She is shy, a little sad and subdued; she doesn't have the confidence of her sister. Good dancer.

Herbie: Baritone, about 45. Agent for Rose's children, Rose's boyfriend and a possible husband number 4. He has a heart of gold but also has the power to defend the people he loves with strength.

Tulsa: High Baritone. Casting 18+ to play 17 - 25. Boy-next-door type. Strives to break out of the troupe with an act of his own. Extremely strong dancer in all styles of show dance including tap.

Dainty June: Alto, Casting 18+ to play 16 - 24. Baby June as a young teenager. The older she gets, the less she enjoys being her mother's trained monkey. Strong dancer with special skills (baton twirling, splits, tap, etc) and strong singer.

Louise/Gypsy Rose Lee: Mezzo, 18-25. Baby Louise as a teenager, who grows up to be Gypsy Rose Lee. Still pushed aside by Madam Rose in favor of June, until she herself becomes her mother's new pet project. Portrays both the awkward teen and a sophisticated woman we know now as Gypsy Rose Lee. Comfortable with profession-burlesque dancing. Elegantly clad and hints at removing clothes, but doesn’t. Strong movement skills needed.

Tessie Tura: Mezzo Belt, 30-55. A burlesque dancer just past her prime. Shares her dressing room with Louise. She was once a ballerina and still has some of the moves. A course broad who's been around the block. Very funny. Strong movement training, ballet experience is helpful.

Mazeppa: Alto Belt, 30-55. A burlesque dancer just past her prime. A burlesque dancer who's tough and physically intimidating. Trumpet playing skills would be great but not required. Strong movement or dance skills.

Electra: Mezzo Belt, 30-55. A burlesque dancer just past her prime. Quieter than her counterparts but her costume is wired with lights, allowing her to shine without working up a sweat. Strong movement or dance skills.

Uncle Jocko: Over 30. Vaudeville master of ceremonies as a weely kiddie talent show. Hates Stage Mothers. Singing is not mandatory.

Pop: Over 60. Rose's father. Does not believe that she or the girls will amount to anything. Singing is not mandatory.

BEAUTIFUL:

SEEKING:

CAROLE KING: Female identifying, White, Mezzo-Soprano (late teens-late 20’s). Carole has aspirations of becoming a songwriter but never dreams of becoming a star. She is a funny and vulnerable girl from a Jewish family in Brooklyn with a rare talent. Carole is often the peace maker in difficult situations. She is most comfortable behind a piano. Proficient in piano and able to accompany herself in key moments in the show.

GERRY GOFFIN: Male identifying, any ethnicity, Tenor (late teens-late 20’s). Gerry is Carole’s songwriting partner and eventual husband. He is brooding and ambitious with a rebel vibe but has the innate lyric-writing talent to back it up. Under his slick exterior is an innately sympathetic, wounded person. He always seems to want what he can’t have.

CYNTHIA WEIL: Female identifying, any ethnicity, Mezzo-Soprano (late teens-late 20’s). Cynthia is a talented songwriter and best friend to Carole. She becomes romantically involved with her writing partner Barry and the couple share an office wall with Carole and Gerry. Cynthia is whip-smart, chic and very playful. She knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to go for it. Excellent comedic timing.

BARRY MANN: Male identifying, any ethnicity, Tenor (late teens-late 20’s). Barry is Cynthia’s songwriting partner and romantic interest. He is very neurotic but instantly likable. Barry is his own worst enemy and is stronger because of his partnership with Cynthia. Excellent comedic timing.

GENIE KLEIN: Female identifying, White (40’s-50’s). Carole’s Jewish mother. Genie had her own artistic dreams, but life, motherhood and an unfaithful husband got in her way. She is very protective of Carole and wants to make sure her daughter avoids the same mistakes. Proficient in piano. Singing is a plus but not mandatory.

DON KIRSHNER: Male identifying, any ethnicity, Baritone/Bass (40’s-50’s). Don is an influential music publisher and boss to Carole, Gerry, Cynthia and Don. He is fast-talking, energetic, and sometimes intimidating, but he has a real affinity for his writers and artists. He knows what is going to sell.

ENSEMBLE: A multitalented ensemble who will portray members of Carole’s inner circle as well as famous musical groups that Carole, Gerry, Cynthia and Barry wrote for, including the following groups. Dance skills are a plus.

The Righteous Brothers (2 male identifying actors, any ethnicity, 20’s-30’s)

The Shirelles (4 female identifying, Black actors, 20’s-30’s)

The Drifters (4 male identifying, Black actors, 20’s-30’s)

TYA SNOW QUEEN:

DIRECTOR’S NOTE:

How do we determine what’s good? What’s evil? Should you play it safe and live in a world of order and analysis, or take risks, be brave, and jump headfirst into the adventures life and love offer? Based on the original and incredibly popular Hans Christian Anderson tale of the same name, The Snow Queen follows the adventures of a tenacious and gutsy little girl, Gerda, who embarks on a perilous quest to rescue her best friend, Kai, from the icy grip of the Snow Queen herself. This show blurs the already blurry line between fantasy and reality, and with its edgy pop rock score and quirky, winsome characters, this centuries old story remains relevant today. We’re looking for artists to experiment, explore, create, and get weird with us!

Though specific pronouns are used in the descriptions below, character’s genders and the way they are referred to in the show are open to conversation, so please feel comfortable discussing that with the team.

GERDA: 12-15 years old. Strong movement a plus. Gerda is bright, friendly, inquisitive, and determined. She’s a thoughtful and playful kid who is thrust into an adventure to find and save her best friend. Despite the seemingly unbeatable odds, she reaches deep inside herself for strength she didn’t know she had and perseveres with the help of compassionate companions she meets along her journey.

KAI: 12-15 years old. Curious, kind and imaginative at the start of his journey, he transforms and becomes cold, obsessive, and practical to a fault. He foregoes play and friendship for what he feels is a safer world devoid of emotions and imagination.
