PREPARATION

Prepare either 1) If not singing - 2 contrasting monologues; 2 minutes total; 2) If only singing; 2 minutes total for song and monologue; bring music in your key and clearly marked; or 3) you can prepare a one minute monologue and 16 bars of a song. Bring picture and resume.

Below are character descriptions with approximate starting ages for the start of the play. We are in need of actors who can realistically portray these characters over the course of the 20-year span of the play.

Henrietta Leavitt (Female, 30-39) : Brilliant, determined, a dreamer, hard of hearing (wears a hearing aid), has never much cared for the “status quo.”

Peter Shaw (Male, 30–39) : The head astronomer’s apprentice, reserved, his views have never really been challenged prior to the events of the play. He is in love with Henrietta.

Annie Jump Cannon (Female, 40–49) : A leader, tough, sure, grows into a firebrand for the suffrage movement. Willeminia Fleming (Female, 45–59) : Scottish with an accent, intelligent, witty, warm and outgoing, the first of her kind, smart as a whip and fun.

Margaret Leavitt (Female, 25–35) : A homebody, genuine, sweet-natured, realist. Ability to sing and play the piano a plus.

D’Ysquith Family (Male, Baritone): Plays a myriad of family members of different ages, ranks and genders.

Monty Navarro (Male, Baritone): Handsome, clever, charismatic, vulnerable and endearing. Discovers he is in line to become the Earl of Highhurst, and intends to kill off the family that stands in his way.

Miss Shingle (Female, Soprano): Monty's unexpected visitor.

Sibella Halward (Female, Soprano): The girl Monty loves.

Meg Snider (Female, 30-37): Florence’s actual niece. Vivacious, warm, and has a great sense of humor. Has unfulfilled dreams of the great big world outside of central Pennsylvania she has yet to experience.

Leo Clark (Male, 30-45): A Shakespeare actor from England, marginally gifted, charming yet mildly pompous, prone to temper tantrums, longs to achieve stardom. Pretends to be Florence’s niece, Maxine.

Jack Gable (Male, 30-45): A Shakespeare actor from England, Leo’s partner, easily dragged into Leo’s harebrained schemes, nice guy, longs to settle down. Pretends to be Florence’s other niece, Stephanie.

Audrey (Female, 20-26): Florence’s part-time aide. A well-built, extremely sweet and good natured “intelligent airhead.” Audrey roller-skates.

Duncan Wooley (Male, 45-55): Local minister, engaged to Meg. A good man, but fussy, headstrong, set in his ways, egocentric.

Florence Snider (Female, 60+): Extremely crusty, terrible eyesight, wealthy, wily, ailing, possibly a hypochondriac.

Doc Myers (Male, 50+): Local doctor, Chief Moose and father to Butch. A likeable curmudgeon.

Butch Myers (Male, 20-26): A little slow on the uptake, built like he played high school football, sincere, good-hearted.

Captain Tempest (Tenor): a Starship Captain, all-American hero; stern but good-natured.

Doctor Prospero (Baritone): A mad scientist marooned for 15 years on the planet D’Illyria.

Miranda (Alto): Prospero and Gloria’s daughter. Isolated since childhood, all events to her are strange and wonderful.

Arie l (Mezzo-Soprano, Alto, Baritone:) a robot bound to Prospero, and guardian of Miranda.

Cookie (Tenor): the youngest member of the Crew. The ship’s cook. A hopeless romantic who falls for Miranda.

Science Officer (Mezzo-Soprano): A woman with a mysterious past: She is also Gloria, Prospero’s wife.

Bosun Arras (Baritone): Captain Tempest’s right-hand person; fiercely loyal, sometimes coarse and overly eager.

Navigation Officer (Alto): prone to panic.

Mrs. Bennet (Female, 50-65): Married to Mr. Bennet and has five daughters.

Mr. Bennet (Male, 50-65): The patriarch of Longbourn House. Married to Mrs. Bennet and has five daughters.

Elizabeth Bennet (Female, 20) : The Bennet's second eldest daughter; passionate, lively, attractive, intelligent; and extremely quick and witty, but with a tendency to judge on first impressions.

Jane Bennet (Female, 22): The eldest daughter; considered the most beautiful girl in the neighborhood; shy, sweet, intelligent, with a desire to see good in others.

Mary Bennet (19)/Charlotte Lucas (27): Mary, is the 3rd daughter who reads mostly; tends to make ponderous quotes from literature and Charlotte Lucas is Elizabeth's good friend and confidante.

Kitty Bennet (Female, 17): the 4th daughter, charming; speaks very well; ability to sing.

Lydia Bennet/Georgiana (Female, 16): Lydia is the youngest daughter; very lively, outspoken; a vivacious flirt and Georgiana, is Mr. Darcy's younger sister, attractive, gracious, well mannered.

Mr. Darcy (Male, 28): A very rich landowner and friend of Mr. Bingley. Tall, handsome,intelligent, proud, but aloof and socially distant from other classes.

Mr. Bingley/Colonel Fitzwilliam/Servant (Male, 20-25): Mr. Bingley, is handsome, charming, kind, wealthy; he lacks some resolve and is easily influenced by Darcy, his best friend. Colonel Fitzwilliam, is Darcy's cousin, straightforward, plain spoken well-bred military man.

Sir William Lucas(50)/Mr. Collins(25)/Mr. Gardiner(50) : Mr. Collins is a distance cousin of the Bennet's and heir to Longbourn House; a clergyman; overly obsequious, pompous, and lacking in common sense; Sir William Lucas is a knight living on nearby estate, father of Charlotte, gracious, self-satisfied; and Mr. Gardiner, is Mrs. Bennett's brother; genial, open, generous.

Miss Bingley(22)/Mrs. Gardiner(50) : Miss Bingley is the younger sister of Mr. Bingley; snobbish and difficult; she can be cold, rude, and unapologetic, often trying to prove her superiority over others. Mrs. Gardiner is aunt to Elizabeth.

Ball Guest/George Wickham (Male, 28): the handsome soldier who romances Elizabeth and then Lydia; a military man of superficial charm.

Ball Guest/Lady Catherine De Bourgh/Housekeeper (Female, 50-65): Mr. Darcy's highly critical aunt who is sure no one is good enough for their family; a woman of social standing: haughty, pompous, domineering, and condescending. Also plays Housekeeper, a chatty, friendly serving woman of Darcy's estate.

Abby Brewster : A darling lady in her sixties who poisons elderly men. Abby is the sister of Martha and an aunt to Teddy, Jonathan, and Mortimer.

The Rev. Dr. Harper : Minister and father of Elaine.

Teddy Brewster : Nephew of Abby and Martha Brewster, Teddy is a man in his forties who thinks that he is Theodore Roosevelt.

Officer Brophy :a police officer

Officer Klein : a police officer

Martha Brewster : A sweet elderly woman with Victorian charm who poisons elderly men, Martha is the sister of Abby and an aunt to Teddy, Jonathan, and Mortimer.

Elaine Harper : An attractive girl in her twenties and Mortimer's fiancée, Elaine is the daughter of the Rev. Dr. Harper. She is surprisingly wise in the ways of the world for a minister’s daughter.

Mortimer Brewster : Nephew of Abby and Martha, Mortimer is a drama critic who is engaged to Elaine. He is a nice man who cares for his aunts.

Mr. Gibbs : A man who wishes
