Caucasian male, early 20s; rugged, manly, power tenor with strong ability to be tender as well. Has a dark side and is intellectual. Excellent English dialect a must (LEAD).

Mary Catlett:

Caucasian female, early 20s; Soprano. Strong, confident and independent woman. Captivating and innocent. Becomes a strong and outspoken voice against slavery. Excellent English dialect a must (LEAD).

Nanna:

African-American female, late 40s – early 50s; maternal character towards Mary, purchased by Mary’s mother after the death of the father. Soulful alto or mezzo-soprano. West African dialect a must (LEAD).

Thomas:

African-American male, late 30s – early 40s; A father figure for John Newton. Though physically imposing, heartfelt and vulnerable. Soulful bari-tenor. West African dialect a must (LEAD)

Captain Newton:

Caucasian male, late 40s – early 50s; John Newton’s father. Bari-tenor. Powerful, a natural born leader. Excellent English dialect a must (LEAD)

Major Gray:

Caucasian male, 24-30; Tenor. Commanding and debonair. The young military commander of the Chatham garrison, a position he was given due to his distant relation to King George II. Excellent upper-class British dialect. Comic in his egocentricity yet dangerous due to a lack of patience and self worth (LEAD).

Princess:

African-American female, 40s; Elegant, regal, strong character acting ability. An African slave trader. A big influence on John Newton. Soulful alto or mezzo soprano. West African dialect a must (LEAD)
