Roles: MAI KUDA – African, 40s – 60s. A mother figure. Tough. She is not sophisticated, but has status especially within her tribe. Actor should have a sense of humor. JEKESAI/ESTHER – African, 20s. A fighter. A woman in a little girl’s body. CHILFORD – African, 40s. A minister in training; he always takes himself seriously. He’s never fit in. He always takes the moral high road. Potentially nerdy. KUDA – African, late 20s. He’s a few years older than Esther. Very smart and has a big heart. He’s not quick to anger, but has the potential for violence. He is able bodied; a somewhat strapping young man. CHANCELLOR – African, 40s. He is very charming and knows how to manipulate to get what he wants. He has ambitions to work the system and get as far as he can. Smary and devious; you don’t want to be left alone in room with him. UNCLE – African, 55 or older. A man’s man. The drunken uncle. You wouldn’t want him in charge of anything, especially your family. Crotchety and full of self importance. PRUDENCE – African, 30s to early 40s. Married to Chancellor. She’s sophisticated and also willing to work the system but for survival rather than her own ambition. Polished. Poised. Almost regal. Smart and well spoken.
