BREAKDOWN
PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS:

Actors may choose a side from https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/12Q49ITgeOiAtyzFGPaDw-
So5GmnI-GJ0?usp=sharing OR a comedic contemporary monologue no longer than 3 minutes in

length. Please slate with name, the side you have selected or and the name of the monologue you
have chosen.

Synopsis: Max, a single lesbian, just gave birth. Max is unemployed, with a house that’s falling apart,
an ex on the loose, and overwhelmed by the breastfeeding challenges of the newborn. Can Goldie,
an Orthodox Jewish lactation consultant, help guide Max into motherhood? Or will conflicting family
values get the better of them both? A surprising and deeply human comedy about motherhood, family,
and doing what comes naturally.

SEEKING:
GOLDIE (She/her, 30s-40s, white) An Orthodox Jewish lactation consultant. Judgemental, acerbic, but
deeply warm. Begins in a place of clear authority but winds up with huge questions, especially about
her teenage daughter. Big hearted, holding down tradition in a changing world. Young, comic
matriarch.

MAX (She/her or she/they or they/them 30s, BIPOC) An openly queer person who has just given birth.
Huge heart, a social worker, we meet Max immediately post-partum and post breakup so there’s a lot
going on at once. Comedy and pathos alternate quickly for Max (the play is overall a comedy). Seeks
to be the best mother possible in a world that offers no support. NOTE: Simulated breastfeeding will
be required.

MIKE (He/him, early mid 20s, any ethnicity) Lisa’s brother. A well-meaning slacker waking up to consequences. Mike has a lot of charm and means well, but at the start of the play he’s a middle- class man-child pot dealer coasting through life. Deferential kid brother energy. Grows a great deal. Strong comic chops.

LISA (She/her, 30s, role open to all ethnicities) Max’s ex and Mike’s sister. A corporate lawyer who
just left Max for her male boss and is flailing with high drama regret. Sharp with language. Strong
comic chops. A heart in there somewhere.

SHAYNA (She/her, 18+ to play late teens, white) Orthodox Jewish. Goldie’s daughter. A wry, sullen
good girl from Borough Park. Closeted. Her curiosity and desire drive her to disobey her mother and
launches a coming-of-age journey. Has a dry sense of humor but also a great deal of vulnerability.
