Setting: Fall of 1898, on the prairie outside of Nicodemus, KS. Many people who had been born into slavery migrated to the West due in large part to the Homestead Act of 1860. Seeking a better life and free land, many women became early pioneers. This is a story about some of those people – a moving drama of courage, tenacity and freedom.

African American woman, 32. Sophie’s sister. A homesteader. Writes oral histories.
Minnie Dove Charles:
African American woman, 21. Fannie’s sister. Married to Frank. Lives in London. A babe in the woods.
Wil Parish:
African American man, 40. A homesteader. Sweet on Fannie. Good, honest.
Frank Charles:
African American man, 36. Light-skinned. Minnie’s husband. Wife-beater, scoundrel. Lives beyond his means.
