DANNY – (male, late teens to mid 20’s) Leader of the “T-BIRDS”. Good-looking, strong and confident, with an air of cool easy-going charm. Strong singer/dancer. VOCAL: Tenor D4 - B5. All ethnicities encouraged.
SANDY – (female, late teens to mid 20’s) New girl in town. Sweet, wholesome, naïve, cute and innocent. A “Sandra Dee” type. Strong singer/dancer. VOCAL: A3 – F5. All ethnicities encouraged.
THE “PINK LADIES” The club-jacketed, gum-chewing, hip-swinging girls’ gang that hangs around with the “T-Birds”.
RIZZO - (female, late teens to mid 20’s) Leader of the “Pink Ladies”. Tough, sarcastic and outspoken but vulnerable with unconventional good looks. Strong singer/dancer. VOCAL: A3 – C5. All ethnicities encouraged.
FRENCHY – (female, late teens to mid 20’s) A dreamer. Good natured. A loyal friend. Can’t wait to finish high school so she can be a beautician. Strong singer/dancer. VOCAL: A3 – D5. All ethnicities encouraged.
MARTY – (female, late teens to mid 20’s) The “beauty” of the Pink Ladies. Pretty, looks older than the other girls, but betrays her real age when she opens her mouth. Tries to act sophisticated. Strong singer/dancer. VOCAL: C4 – C5. All ethnicities encouraged.
JAN – (female, late teens to mid 20’s) A compulsive eater. Funny and loud. Pushy with the girls, but shy with the boys. Strong singer/dancer. VOCAL: Alto A3 – C5. All ethnicities encouraged.
THE “T-BIRDS” A super-cool, greased-hair, hard-looking group of high school wheeler-dealers…or so they think.
KENICKIE - (male, late teens to mid 20’s) Second in command of the “T-Birds”. Tough looking, tattooed, surly, avoids any show of softness. Off-beat sense of humor. Strong singer/dancer. VOCAL: Tenor C4 – F5. All ethnicities encouraged.
DOODY - (male, late teens to mid 20’s) Youngest of the guys. Small, boyish, open, with a disarming smile and a hero-worshipping attitude toward the other guys. Strong singer/dancer. VOCAL: Tenor D4 – A5 with additional falsetto. Must play guitar. All ethnicities encouraged.
ROGER – (male, late teens to mid 20’s) The “anything for-a-laugh” stocky type. Full of mischief, half-baked schemes and ideas. A clown who enjoys putting other people on. Strong singer/dancer. VOCAL: D4 – A5. All ethnicities encouraged.
SONNY – (male, late teens to mid 20’s) A funny braggart and wheeler-dealer who thinks he’s a real lady killer. Strong singer/dancer. VOCAL: Baritone G3 – A5. All ethnicities encouraged.
PATTY - (female, late teens to mid 20’s) A typical cheerleader. Attractive and sure of herself, but can be given to bursts of disconcerting enthusiasm. She’s a bit of a pain and unpopular with the “Pink Ladies”. Strong dancer. VOCAL: Alto D4 – A4. She twirls a baton. All ethnicities encouraged.
CHA-CHA – (female, late teens to mid 20’s) Bombshell wannabe. Takes pride in being “the best dancer at St. Bernadette.” Excellent Dancer. VOCAL: C4 – C5. All ethnicities encouraged.
EUGENE – (male, late teens to mid 20’s) Brainiac/nerd. Physically awkward, with weak eyes and high-pitched voice. An apple polisher, smug and pompous but gullible. Strong singer/dancer. VOCAL: A3 – E5. All ethnicities encouraged.
VINCE FONTAINE – (Early 30’s to early 40’s) Typical “teen audience” radio disc jockey. Slick, egotistical, fast-talking. A veteran “greaser.” Strong singer/mover. VOCAL: flexible – bari/tenor. All ethnicities encouraged.
JOHNNY CASINO/TEEN ANGEL – played by same actor. (early to late 20’s)
JOHNNY CASINO – “greaser” student at Rydell who leads a rock and roll band and likes to think of himself as a real rock “n” roll idol. VOCAL: G4 – E5. All ethnicities encouraged.
TEEN ANGEL – Good looking, falsetto voiced, matinee idol type. Singer who would have caused girls to scream and riot back in 1958. VOCAL: E4 – F#5. All ethnicities encouraged.
MISS LYNCH – (mid 30’s – early 50’s) A no-nonsense, serious, old maid English teacher. Strong comedienne. Must play “drunk” well. Sings “It’s Raining on Prom Night”. VOCAL: A3 – C5. All ethnicities encouraged.

OTTO KRINGELEIN: late 40s-early 50’s. A terminally ill bookkeeper from the small town life looking to live life to the fullest in his remaining time. Charming, joyous, lovable, generous, and grateful. Tenor.
BARON FELIX VON GAIGERN: late 20s. The picture of debonair. Dashing, charming, and optimistic but flat broke. Seeking his own legacy. A good guy who lives and loves fast, living in the now. Passionate and romantic, falls in love with Grushinskaya. Tenor.
HERMANN PREYSING: mid 50’s. General Director of a large textile mill. Disillusioned by money and terrified of losing his life style. He cheats, lies, and manipulates to get what he wants. Baritone.
COLONEL-DOCTOR OTTERNSCHLAG: 60’s. Wounded by gas and shrapnel in WW1, he is a cynical, tortured, and ruined man. Omnipotent and functions as the narrator of the piece. The character has only one eye, and one leg is missing/paralyzed. Character baritone.
ERIK: mid 20’s. The assistant concierge who is deeply loyal and expecting the birth of his son any day. He struggles between making a living for his growing family and being present in his family’s daily life, working long hours to provide. Eager to start a family. Intelligent, ambitious, devoted. Baritone.
ZINNOWITZ: mid to late 40’s. A Berlin lawyer. The secretary for the textile mill company under Preysing's direction. Encourages Preysing to lie. Ambitious, greedy, and willing to do whatever it takes. Baritone.
FLAEMMCHEN: early to mid 20’s. A pretty girl with moxie just off the bus with dreams of Hollywood. Constantly in conflict between her ambition and her morals. She is charming, gamine, flirtatious, and has great sex appeal. Strong dancer or mover. Alto with Belt.
ELIZAVETA GRUSHINSKAYA: mid to late 40’s. The still-beautiful and enchanting, world famous, Russian Prima Ballerina constantly proclaiming her last performance. Hanging on to her old life and identity as a superstar, feeling old and irrelevant until she is revived by the young Baron's love. Demands only the best from herself and for her fans, extremely hard on herself. Ballet experience a plus. Mezzo.
RAFFAELA: late 30’s to early 40’s. Confidante, secretary, and Elizaveta's long time dresser. Secretly longing for and in love with Grushinskaya- deeply devoted and fiercely protective of her. Hardworking, reliable, and smart. Mezzo.

ENSIGN NELLIE FORBUSH (US Navy): Female Identified, 20s. A spirited, young nurse from Little Rock, Arkansas, who falls in love with Emile. Optimistic, creative, hard working and adventurous, she considers herself open and liberal but discovers closely held prejudices she did not know she had.
EMILE DE BECQUE: Male Identified, 40s-early 50s. A wealthy, older French plantation owner. Though he killed a man while living in France as a young man, he is charming, sophisticated, and fiercely principled. Struggles with his sense of duty and with what he owes to the world around him.
LT. JOSEPH CABLE (USMC): Male Identified, 20’s: A very intelligent officer, Cable is newly arrived to the island. While he has actually seen action in the war and been part of dangerous missions, he is still naive in many ways. When he falls in love with Liat he must grapple with his privilege and prejudice.
BLOODY MARY: Female Identified, Asian Pacific Islander. Mid 30’s to 50’s. A cunning merchant who sells souvenirs to the American sailors. Able to play off of the American’s expectations of her in order to get the upper hand. She is nobody’s fool. Cares passionately for her daughter Liat, who she thinks can find a better life with a rich American.
LIAT: Female Identified, Asian Pacific Islander, 18-early 20s. Bloody Mary’s daughter who falls in love with Lt Cable. Though their courtship is quick there is a real chemistry between the two of them. Must be excellent at communicating non-verbally as she and Cable do not share a common oral language.
LUTHER BILLIS: Male Identified, 20’s-30s. A constant schemer, with little respect for authority. Most comfortable as a clown for his fellow sailors, he is also a cunning entrepreneur with several Island businesses running on the side and soft spot for Nellie.
CAPT. GEORGE BRACKETT (US Navy): Male Identified 40s-50’s The commanding officer on the island, his self importance hides a heart of gold. Does not sing.
CMDR. WILLIAM HARBISON (US Navy): Male identified 30’s-50s. The hot-headed second in command to Brackett. Does not sing.

HALEY WESTERBROOK
(female, 12) Lead. Daughter of Dr. Westerbrook and Annabel. A deeply intelligent, stubborn and capricious twelve-year-old girl struggling with an enormous personal loss. She hides her fear of the unknown behind a mask of unflappable courage - also extremely adept at the sarcastic barb. British accent. Very vocally and physically demanding role, with 6-8 songs and lots of jumping, climbing, and puppet riding. Seeking actors of all ethnicities between the ages of 11 and 13.
DR. THOMAS WESTERBROOK
(male, 40’s) Lead. Father of Haley, husband of Annabel. A marine research scientist and obsessive workaholic who is determined to start putting family first, Dr. Westerbrook has the drive to be a first rate father, but lacks the patience and listening skills to succeed. Though he struggles to manage a daughter who matches him in intelligence and surpasses him in stubbornness, at his core he’s driven by his unconditional love for her. Seeking all ethnicities. British accent. Bari-tenor to A. Good mover – as with all roles will occasionally puppeteer and serve in the storytelling Ensemble.
LADY LEANA CALLAGHAN
(female, 30’s – 40’s) Lead. Dr. Westerbrook’s benefactor – a wealthy heiress obsessed with finding the Loch Ness Monster. Strong-willed, stubborn, and occasionally manipulative, Callaghan compensates for her insecurities and sense of isolation by employing ruthless tactics. Scottish accent. Strong belt up to D. Good mover – as with all roles will occasionally puppeteer and serve in the storytelling Ensemble.
NESSIE
(female, 20’s – 40’s) Lead. The Loch Ness Monster. A hopeful dreamer disguised as an aggressive hermit, after a lifetime of tragedy and loss Nessie has learned that isolation from the world is the only means of survival. Nessie is as playful as she is volatile as she is vulnerable. Seeking all ethnicities. Strong Scottish accent. Mezzo with strong mix/belt. Extremely physical role – puppeteering the entire show, and also part of the storytelling Ensemble.
CAPTAIN CJ
(male, 30’s – 40’s) Supporting. Captain of Dr. Westerbrook’s research vessel. A mercenary, he makes a display of being untrusting and money-motivated, though in truth he cares for his co-workers more than he’d like to let on. He’s dry, sarcastic, and enjoys making jokes at others’ expense. Seeking all ethnicities. Cockney accent. Tenor, strong singer and comedic actor. Great mover – very involved in storytelling Ensemble.
ANNABEL WESTERBROOK
(30’s – 40’s) Supporting. Haley’s mother and Dr. Westerbrook’s wife. A storyteller by nature, Annabel is fanciful, understanding, and comfortable with the unknown. In other words, she’s an awesome mom with an excellent bedside manner – though she’s hiding some truths from her daughter. Scottish accent. Soprano who will sing in Gaelic. Good mover - very involved in storytelling Ensemble.
THE OILER
(male, 30’s – 40’s) Supporting. A hired hand on board Dr. Westerbrook’s research vessel. A champion of uncertainty, he speaks only in riddles and takes peculiar actions in order to promote his image as the ultimate mysterious entity. Scottish accent. Seeking strong comic actor and phenomenal dancer. Baritenor. Very involved in storytelling Ensemble.
MR. OGILVIE
(male, 30’s – 50’s) Supporting. The executor of Callaghan’s parents’ estate. Extremely dry, extremely judgmental, while trying and failing to maintain his extreme professionalism. Seeking all ethnicities. Scottish accent. Strong deadpan actor and great mover. Any voice type. Very involved in storytelling Ensemble.
