Late 40s-50s; A common man, with infectious charm, a strong sense of tradition and great warmth. Very stuck in his ways and within the play struggles to embrace change and allow for other ideas and possibilities. He is well-respected and has a strong moral compass which is often in conflict with his vulnerability.

Late 40s-50s; Tevye's domineering wife, very stubborn with a profound love for her family and tradition. Very closed to change and anything outside her comfort zone. Can be seen as overbearing at times, but it comes from a place of protection and survival.

40s-60s; A matchmaker, can be very intrusive through her meddling in everyone's life. A gossip. Must have a true comic sense and great timing.

Late 20s (should look younger); Tevye's oldest daughter. Very responsible and mature, and deeply in love with Model the tailor. The "older sister" in many ways, looking out for her younger sisters. She sings the lead in MATCHMAKER.

Late 20s (should look younger); A tailor, in love with Tzeitel (his childhood friend). He is a bit of a nebbish type, often limited by his fear. He becomes more grown up and the man he is meant to be by the end of the play. Should have good comic timing. Sings MIRACLES OF MIRACLES.

20s; Tevye's second daughter. She is very romantic and adventurous and passionately in love with Perchik. She must have a beautiful soprano voice, and natural beauty. She sings FAR FROM THE HOME I LOVE.

Late 20s (could be younger or even a bit older); A student with radical ideas, who falls deeply in love with Hodel. A passionate intellectual - a true "man with a cause." He sings NOW I HAVE EVERYTHING.

20 (should look younger); Tevya's "favorite" in some ways as they share a special father-daughter bond. She secretly reads, has a great love for books and an usually great thirst for knowledge. Actor must have strong and very graceful movement skills.

20s; A blonde tall and handsome Russian. He is an outsider in many ways and his love for Chava creates the ultimate test for her father.

Lazar Wolfe:
50s; A big coarse, seemingly vulgar man who hopes to marry Tzeital. Comparatively, he is one of the most wealthy men in the village, lonely after the loss of his first wife. He most likely will u/s the part of Tevye.
