Seeking:

Mỹlinh (Female - South/East Asian - 20s) Immigrated to the US as a small child, law school graduate, affable, hardworking, and pretty darn Americanized. Speaks perfect Vietnamese and English because she can.

Mrs. Trần (Female - South/East Asian - late 40s-50s) Vietnamese nationalist, married to Mr. Trần, elegant, smart, traditional, and direct; grows very fond of Mỹlinh through the night.

Mr. Murray Drumming (Male – Caucasian - 50s-60s) Former Dept. of State diplomat, spent 30 years in East Asia, kind, likable and jovial. Married to Joyce. Always the diplomat and knows how to turn the temperature down.

THE LION IN WINTER, by James Goldman

Director: TBD

Dates:

First Rehearsal: 9 / 15 / 2022

Opening: 10 / 21 / 2022

Closing: 11 / 13 / 2022

Synopsis: A family feud of imperial proportions! Set during Christmas 1183, the play tells the wickedly amusing tale of King Henry II, his imprisoned queen, Eleanor of Aquitaine, and their three entitled, double-dealing sons who vie for the throne. This viciously funny drama is a high-stakes chess game where the pieces constantly change and no one is spared the sword.

Seeking:

Richard (Male – Any Ethnicity – 26): The eldest surviving son of Henry and Eleanor. Richard is handsome, graceful, impressive, and has been a famous soldier since his mid teens. War is his profession, and he is good at it. He is easily the strongest and toughest of the three sons.

John (Male – Any Ethnicity – 16): The youngest son of Henry and Eleanor, he is sulky and sullen, with a boyish outlook on his position. He is described as pimply and smelling of compost. He is Henry's favorite, but also the weakest. He vacillates throughout the play, not out of cleverness, but out of fear and weakness. He is easily tricked and manipulated by Geoffrey.

Philip II (Male – Any Ethnicity – 18): He has been King of France for three years. He is not initially as accomplished as Henry in manipulating people but seems to acquire greater skills at this during the play. He is impressive and handsome.

The following roles are CAST. Performers will be considered as possible replacements should any become necessary:

Eleanor of Aquitaine (Female – Any Ethnicity – 61): The wife of Henry, a beautiful woman of hot temperament, and great authority and presence. She has been a queen for nearly 46 years and is thoroughly capable of holding her own in a man's world. She schemes against Henry and loves him intensely at the same time. She has contempt for her children but is not willing to see them harmed.

Alais Capet (Female – Any Ethnicity – 23): In love with Henry, everyone underestimates her intellect and power. She is initially portrayed as innocent, but by the end of the play has begun to acquire a ruthless streak of her own, insisting that Henry imprison his three sons for the rest of their lives in the dungeon.

Henry II (Male – Any Ethnicity – 50): Though aging, he is still very nearly as vital as he ever was. His manipulations of family and others are portrayed as spontaneous and emotional as opposed to the well-thought-out stratagems of Eleanor, and the cold, calculating machinations of Geoffrey.

Geoffrey (Male – Any Ethnicity –25): A son of Henry and Eleanor, he is a man of energy and action. He is attractive, charming and has the strongest intellect of the family; he is also a cold, amoral schemer. His view of himself is of one who yearned greatly for the love of his parents while receiving none.

Sherlock Holmes (Male – Any Ethnicity – 40’s): Highly intelligent, confident, charismatic, quick-witted, obsessive. Thinks very highly of his close friend Watson. A sophisticated mind who savors adventure and an intriguing mystery and has a manic gleam of mischief in his eyes. A mind that works overtime.

Doctor Watson (Male – Any Ethnicity – 40’s): Smart, grounded, full of heart and wonder, lives to have adventures and assist his close friend Holmes. We see the play through his eyes. He is the heart and soul of the play.

Male Track One (Male – Any Ethnicity – 30-50): Multiple roles, including Stapleton (seemingly geeky butterfly lover who conceals a psychopath within), Barrymore (mournful caretaker of Baskerville Hall), Milker (scrappy Dickensian urchin boy), Lucy (loving wife of Wilson), and Dr. Mortimer (elegant, friendly, passionate).
