BREAKDOWN

ESAI’S TABLE follows the journey of three young black men on a mythical night sea journey atop a magical old table. Through artistic expression and personal revelations, we learn why they've been chosen to navigate this journey. Destiny meets eternity in this story of black lives, friendship, family, and love.

SEEKING:

ESAI WALLACE: Male. Black. Late 30’s – early 50’s. Gentle, stern, stylish and sophisticated. Always immaculately dressed, like he’s from a different time. There is a sense that everything he does is scripted, and that he knows more than he lets on. An intense, but gentle spirit. Carries a natural air of authority. Mysterious, maybe a little mischievous? He is a man of many moods and emotions and “slides into personalities with the fluidity of a winding stream.” Something a little unpredictable about him, but not sinister; you get the impression that he’s someone you can trust. Skilled with language, and has a way with words. Has a weariness that permeates the depths of his very being; it’s the fatigue of someone who has seen history repeat itself, and knows that he will see it repeat again.

MICHAEL FERGUSON: Male. Black. 19 years old. Large build. Distant, closed off. From Miami. A big presence. He has a large physical build, which makes him look older than he really is, and the puppy-dog energy of a teenager who hasn’t grown into his body yet. Outspoken, with a rowdy sense of humor. Acts out to be noticed. To protect himself, he’s developed a tough persona and an emotional wall designed to keep others out. But underneath that gruff exterior is a sensitive, gentle, and empathic soul. A talented artist, with a breathtakingly vivid imagination—if you can ever get him to admit it.

DAVID TYLER JONES: Male. Black. 18+ to play 18. Confident, stylish, handsome. From Harlem. Comes from privilege, and has grown up with access to the arts & education. As a result, he has cultivated a sense of worldliness and sophistication. Has many varied creative interests, from music to filmmaking. A virtuoso trumpet player. Talented and ambitious, he’s hungry to make the most of himself, but also feels the external pressure from his parents to succeed and uphold the family legacy. Self-possessed and a bit cocky, but not egotistical; he is kind and generous towards others, and happy to put his advantages and privilege to use by taking others under his wing. Trumpet playing skills a plus.

ADAM IVERSON: Male. Black. 18+ to play 15. Cute, wide eyed, present. From Oakland. Radiant, with a boundless, open energy. Special. Creative, intuitive, and effortlessly genuine, without a hint of pretention or artifice. Gentle and kind, and not afraid of vulnerability—in both himself and others. For such a young person, he is truly comfortable in his identity and in his own skin. Polite, well-mannered, and uncommonly mature. He has grown up knowing love and support, and as a result, is capable of great love himself.
