Narrator/Mysterious Man (Male, open ethnicity, age 30 to 70): An excellent story-teller who relates directly with the audience. Sometimes a mischievous vagrant and nosy meddler with a secret.
Cinderella (Female, open ethnicity, age 20 to 35): A young, earnest maiden who is constantly mistreated by her stepmother and stepsisters. Powerful and funny. Vocal range top: G5. Vocal range bottom: G3.
Jack (Male, open ethnicity, age 18+): The feckless giant killer who is ‘almost a man.’ He is adventurous, naive, energetic, and bright-eyed. Appears young. Vocal range top: G4. Vocal range bottom: B2.

Tracy Turnblad (Female, White, 18+ to play high school age): Confident, talented, and determined. A romantic with a good heart who loves to dance. Bigger in size than other girls but an excellent singer and dancer with strong stage presence. Mezzo-soprano with a strong theatre/pop belt. Vocal range: G3–E5.
Corny Collins (Male, White, age 25–35): Charismatic host of the Corny Collins Show. High baritenor, strong pop singer. Vocal range: D3–Bb4.
Edna Turnblad (White, age 40–55): Tracy's big and blonde mother. Boisterous and commanding. Typically played by a man in drag. Bass-baritone, character voice. Vocal range: F2 (D2 if possible)–D4.
Penny Pingleton (Female, White, 18+ to play high school age): Tracy's best friend and dorky sidekick. Contemporary theatre/pop voice, strong high belt. Vocal range: A3–G5.
Velma Von Tussle (Female, White, age 45–55): Amber's mother and director of Corny Collins' show. Mezzo-soprano with strong belt mix. Vocal range: Ab3–E5.

Leaf Coneybear (Male, open ethnicity, age 20–30): A homeschooled second alternate who finds the public bee an adventure. May have severe ADD and wears a protective helmet. Doubles as Carl Dad. Vocal range: A2–A4.
William Barfee (Male, open ethnicity, age 20–30): Has health problems and a lot to prove. Noted for spelling technique of using his foot. Seeking vindication. Vocal range: C3–Bb4.
Marcy Park (Female, open ethnicity, age 20–30): The ultimate over-achiever with many talents (piano, dance, martial arts, baton twirling, etc.). Vocal range: A3–Eb5.
Olive Ostrovsky (Female, open ethnicity, age 20–30): A word lover, quiet and shy at first, blossoms during the bee. Vocal range: A3–F#5.
Rona Lisa Peretti (Female, open ethnicity, age 30–50): Putnam’s long-time spelling bee hostess and 3rd annual Putnam County spelling champion. Doubles as Olive’s mom. Vocal range: C4–E5.
Douglas Panch (Male, open ethnicity, age 25–40): The vice principal, frustrated with his life. Non-singing role.
