Theophilus Perry:
Baritone-Tenor. Early to Mid-20s. Caucasian. Excellent singing voice. Caring, stoic, and handsome. Based on historical letters written to his wife, Theophilus (Theo) was a young Texan father and husband. Emotionally conflicted, Theo left his pregnant wife and young daughter to fight for the Confederacy. While away he longed for home and family and was dismayed by the ravages of the war plus the lack of order among his ranks. But there was an optimism in the man that did not perish until a last letter he wrote to his wife shortly before he became a casualty of the war. Actor will play multiple characters in addition to Theo. Among the songs he sings: Yellow Rose of Texas, Amazing Grace, He’s Gone Away…
Harriet Perry:
Soprano. Early to Mid-20s. Caucasian. Compassionate. Beautiful. Grounded. Based on historical letters written to her husband Theophilus Perry. Theo’s wife and mother of their daughter “Sugar Lumpy”. Despite being pregnant with their future son, Harriet stoically wrote of support for her husband and the Confederate cause while she remained behind in Texas. There were times of great sadness as well-- missing Theo and fearing the worst of fates for her husband. Actress will play multiple characters in addition to Harriet. Elizabeth Keckley:
Mezzo (must be able to blend and harmonize). 40s to 50s. African-American. A true account; Elizabeth Heckley was a slave who bought her freedom and became a dress maker for both Mrs. Jefferson Davis and Mary Todd Lincoln. She latter wrote one of the first ‘tell-all-books’, Behind The Scenes, accounting her life and work in the White House during the Civil War. A woman of great emotional strength and intuition. Despite enduring rape and the loss of family traded away to other slave owners Elizabeth endured with courage and hope. Actress will play multiple characters in addition to Elizabeth.
