SEEKING

Equity actors for various roles.

Deaf/hearing impaired actors strongly encouraged to audition.

PREPARATION

Prepare a brief monologue or two 1-minute contrasting monologues. Total audition time not to exceed 2 minutes. Bring picture and resume.

BREAKDOWN

Mr. Ezra Lambert
Hearing character. Signs fluently. 40’s. Owns the Chilmark General Store and runs it with the help of his daughter. He fought as a young man in the civil war, with his best friend, Nate Smith. He is illiterate. His wife died early leaving him with a young daughter to raise alone.

Miss Anne Lambert
Deaf character. Signs fluently. 20’s. Graduated from American School for the Deaf two years ago. She is an independent, forthright young woman who has proposed the idea to start a school in Chilmark for all the children, deaf and hearing. She has asked Miss Sarah Hall to assist with a proposal.

Miss Sarah Hall
Hearing character. Signs fluently. 30s-40’s. An unmarried, strong-willed woman, she has made educating the deaf to speak her mission. She believes in the “German Method”, which insists there be no signing support for learning to speak. She makes a proposal at the Chilmark town meeting.

Mr. Nathaniel (Nate) Smith
Deaf character. Signs fluently. 40’s. Is a former whaling captain who lost his job. He is a survivor of horrendous hardship on the seas and has moved back to the island and found himself a young wife. He has twin boys, aged four – one deaf and one hearing. He is known island wide for his vivid storytelling.

Mrs. Elizabeth Athearn
Hearing character. Signs fluently. 50’s-60’s. Is the widow of a prominent Islander, sells eggs, makes dresses and has a huge, warm heart “everyone’s mother”. She has been a midwife, babysitter and nanny to more than one generation in Chilmark.
