Please prepare 16 bars of a musical theater song. Bring sheet music in the correct key; accompanist is provided, but may not transpose.

Please bring a picture & resume, stapled back-to-back.

Seeking Ensemble Singers (M/F). Note that in this production, all characters other than Candide, Cunegonde and The Old Lady are chorus. In keeping with Mary Zimmerman's style, all performers will play multiple characters. Available tracks include …

Paquette:

Woman, any ethnicity, early 20s - late 30s. Seductive and charming; the saucy maid. Great comedic timing needed. Performer will play multiple characters. Seeking a true mezzo/soprano (low A-E).

Soldier / Governor:

Male characters, early 40s – early 60s, any ethnicity. Powerful and manipulative; a menacing quality that is disturbing to others. Seeking a great character actor who is malleable and able to play multiple characters. Seeking a very strong singer – high baritone/tenor (middle Eb - high A).

Innkeeper / Schoolteacher:

Male characters, early 30s – late 40s, any ethnicity. Seeking a very strong true bass (who ideally has a low Eb). This track generally plays figures of authority (priests, etc.).

Orator / Grand Inquisitor:

Male characters, early 30s – late 40s, any ethnicity. Seeking a very strong first tenor (who sings to a high Bb).

Orator's Wife:

Any ethnicity, late 20s - late 30s. Seeking a very strong first soprano (who sings to a high C).

Anabaptist / Captain / Others:

Male characters, early 30s - late 40s, any ethnicity. Seeking a high tenor (with strong voice to Bb).

Servant / Others:

Male characters, 20s, any ethnicity. Seeking a baritone who moves well.

Production has already played two other LORT Theatres, so several tracks are already cast. Auditioning performers may be considered as possible (emergency) replacements for these:

Pangloss:

CAST. Man, late 40s - mid 60s, any ethnicity. Scrawny and lecherous. Mischievous, with a devilish appeal. Odd and off-putting to others, he is ironically optimistic. The first tutor to Candide. Bass or bass-baritone (low A - high F).

Maximilian:

CAST. 30s – mid 40s, any ethnicity. Vain and self-centered; always aware of his appearance. Set in his ways, and blind to the feelings and wants of others. Handsome, with a great stature. Baritone/tenor (low A – high G)

Baroness / Vanderdendur:

CAST. Female characters, late 40s – late 50s, any ethnicity. Character is a worldly woman of a certain age, confident in her authority. Alto (up to G).

Baron / Martin:

CAST. Male characters, mid 40s – late 50s, any ethnicity. Track for a strong character actor who sings well (baritone).

Bird / Others:

CAST. Female characters, 20s, any ethnicity. Track for a versatile young actress who moves well. Soprano (high C / Eb).

Soldier / Cacambo:

CAST. Male characters, early 30s - early 40s, any ethnicity. Track for a versatile character actor who moves well. Non-singing.

Soldier / Senor / Others:

CAST. Male characters, 20s – 30s, any ethnicity. Track for an actor with a strong dance background. Baritone.

Sailor / Others:

CAST. Male characters, 20s, any ethnicity. An innocent. Tenor (up to A).

Queen of El Dorado / Others:

CAST. Female characters, early 30s – mid 40s. Track for a strong actress and singer (alto up to G).
