Seeking:
James Morell:
He's a young, attractive, vibrant 40. He has sublimated his emotional life into his work over the last four or five years, somewhat neglecting his wife, Candida. Active, intelligent, articulate with a quick and skillful facility with language. He is becoming a well-known speaker as a 'Christian Socialist' reverend of a small Church of England parish in London.
Candida Morell:
She is an attractive, but not self-consciously so, 35. She has lived her life skillfully looking after others: her father, husband, and two children. She is charmingly maternal and insightful, keeps herself busy to avoid facing the issues of her personal life.
Eugene Marchbanks:
He is an idealistic young poet from an extremely wealthy family. He has left college and has insinuated himself into the Morell family household. He idealizes Candida and longs for her to return his idealized romanticism. He is 18 years old.
Burgess:
He is the epitome of the self-made wealthy London industrialist, but has proudly kept is Cockney manner and accent. He is Candida's estranged father, and has reappeared to take advantage of his son-in-law's growing social prominence. He is about 60.
Alexander 'Lexy' Mill:
Morell's attractive curate, he has come from a wealthy family and the finest schooling. He has probably been pushed into the church by his family and would rather be out with his friends the pub. He is around 25.
Prosperpine 'Prossy' Garnett:
Morell's devoted and extremely efficient secretary. She has worked on 'bettering herself' and is determined to be successful in a 'man's world' as a working woman. Somewhat repressed, though articulate, and closed off from any social life. She is around 30.
