Seeking (all roles are available (i.e. not yet offered and accepted) unless otherwise specified):

Accent note: The play is written in a mix of British-Jamaican dialect and street slang, but Soho Rep’s production will re-set the play in the US and perform it in an American voice, so that it portrays a Jamaican American family. However, the text will not be performed with Jamaican accents per se. There are selected moments when those sounds and rhythms will come out in the language, but the Theatre will eventually have a dialect coach to aid with that.

Sister #1:

Jamaican American woman, 30-40. Middle sister. Non-committal, protects herself, not sure which side to take or what the truth is.

Sister #2:

Jamaican American woman, 25-40. Baby of the family. Close to her parents. Has a mouth on her. Thinks Dawta is full of it, and tells her so.

Brother:

Jamaican American man, 30-40. Second oldest. Functional, regular guy. Also thinks he was abused by Dad.

Mum:

Jamaican American woman, 60s. Middle-class mother; religious, dignified. Tight-lipped about what she knows.

Dad:

Jamaican American man, 60s. Middle-class father who’s worked a solid job his whole life to provide for his family. Nothing menacing or shady about him. Harmless, warm even.

Dawta:

CAST. Auditioning performers will be considered as possible replacements, should any become necessary. Jamaican American woman, 35-40. Eldest child. Fierce, strong. Working professional. Bringing an accusation of sexual abuse against her father.
