SEEKING
All Characters are African-American. Looking for a wide array of strong physical actors, singers, dancers/movers, acrobats, circus performers, with familiarity with vaudeville style acts. Must be experienced and open to improvisation and collaborative work with text, music and movement in a range of styles, and have experience working within a group and also stand out as a soloist.
Musical styles include: musical theater, choral, gospel/church, opera.
Dance/movement styles include: vaudeville styles, mime, tap dancing, folkloric, vernacular, popular/commercial, hip-hop, swing, lindyhop, charleston, contemporary and classical.
Each chorus member inhabits a number of stylized personae throughout the show, both white and black (e.g. citizens in contemporary society, resistance workers, slaves on a plantation, vaudeville performers).
PREPARATION
Bring jazz, tap and character shoes. Also prepare 16 bars of a classic musical theater style song, upbeat tempo, in case asked to stay and sing. Bring picture and resume.

BREAKDOWN
All characters are African-American.
MEN OF THE CHORUS:
A mime based on Bert Williams:
35-60 years old. Must have skills as a mime or physical actor, comic, clown, but will also sing and speak.
Two tap dancing brothers, a la the Nicholas Brothers
18-30 years old. Don’t actually have to be brothers but should be believe in age and look. Significant experience in tap dancing styles necessary.
Three acrobats:
A trio of acrobats with unique physical and acrobatic skills (i.e contortion, gymnastics solo and as a group).
WOMEN OF THE CHORUS:
A mother
modeled after Bessie Smith in sound, style, and look (35-60). She must be able to read as the Black Clown’s mother.
Three dancing girls
20-35, experienced in various styles: tap, jazz, vernacular, lindyhop, swing, charleston. Good in unison as a trio.
Two women with circus tricks
plate spinning, juggling, clowning, tight rope walking, magic.
