Musical focusing on a group of unique 20-somethings making their way in the big city, seeking their purpose in life, who find themselves living on humble Avenue Q.
Seeking possible future replacements in the Off-Broadway production. All must be strong singer/actors with great comedic timing. Important note: Previous puppetry experience not required.
Princeton / Rod:
Male, 20s. Princeton: Sweet, charming, cute and sincere. Has recently moved to Avenue Q, where he learns life lessons the hard way from puppets and humans alike. Lovable and appealing. Rod: Conservative, uptight investment banker. Closeted homosexual. Trying to come to terms with his sexuality with the help of Nicky, his best friend and roommate. Ability to differentiate these characters with specific voices and physicalities needed. Vocal style: Contemporary musical theatre with a pop flair. Must be able to sustain a high G comfortably. Puppeteer skills a plus but not necessary.
Nicky / Trekkie Monster / Bad Idea Bear:
Male, 20s-30s. Nicky: Unemployed, 20-something slacker. Rod’s roommate. Charming and undeniably cute. Has no problems with Rod being gay. Trekkie Monster: Lives on Avenue Q, in the same building that Princeton moves into. Odd monster with a big heart. Invested in the Internet, and is secretly a millionaire. Bear: Cute, charming little boy bear who, with the help of Girl Bear, is a very bad influence on Princeton. Ability to differentiate these characters with specific voices and physicalities needed. Vocal style: Contemporary musical theatre with a pop flair. Must be able to sustain a high A comfortably. Strong puppeteer skills a plus but not necessary.
Kate Monster / Lucy T. Slut:
Female, 20s. Kate Monster: Kindergarten teaching assistant who dreams about eventually opening a school for monsters. She may look sweet, put-together and conservative, but has a very feisty and opinionated monster side. Quickly falls for the new guy on the block, Princeton. Lucy T. Slut: Vixenish vamp with a dangerous side. Sings at a local café. Star of "Girls Gone Wild" Parts 2, 5 and 7. Sees other women as obstacles to men. Ability to differentiate these characters with specific voices and physicalities needed. Vocal style: Contemporary musical theatre with a pop flair. Mezzo-soprano/belt; comfortably sing up to D in a pop voice. Strong puppeteer skills a plus but not necessary.
Mrs. T / Bad Idea Bear / Ensemble:
Female, 20s–30s. Mrs. T: Old spinster teacher. Bitter and conservative. Kate Monster's boss. Bad Idea Bear: Cute, charming little girl bear who, with the help of Boy Bear, is a very bad influence on Princeton. Ability to differentiate these characters with specific voices and physicalities needed. Any physical type. Vocal style: Contemporary musical theatre with a pop flair. Mezzo-soprano/belt; comfortably sing up to D in a pop voice. Strong puppeteer skills a plus but not necessary.
Christmas Eve:
Asian woman, 20s– 30s. Wants to be a therapist. Lives on Avenue Q with her Jewish husband, Brian. Smart, blunt and edgy, but also nurturing and kind. Vocal style: Must have a strong belt to an E flat in the style of a torch song.
Brian:
20s-30s. Chubby, laid-back, wannabe comedian; unemployed. Good guy who everyone always likes and is easy to be around. Married to Christmas Eve, who is constantly badgering him to get a job. Vocal style: Contemporary musical theatre with a pop flair.
Gary Coleman:
Mid 20s - 40s, African American. Played by a woman. Former celebrity; now lives/works on Avenue Q. Funny and sardonic, with a unique and vivid presence. Has lived life. Any physical type. Vocal style: Contemporary musical theatre with a pop flair. Alto who can sing a Low D and belt to a B flat. Must explore low register.
