Breakdown

Note: The play takes place in a suburban town in central Connecticut.

SEEKING:

ANNE
(early -mid 60’s) Female. New England stock. Someone who let the possibility of a whole life slip away out of fear and responsibility – but still has a quiet power and confidence. Widowed, retired from teaching high school English, she recently moved back to town to be nearer her son Sam, and to see if there’s a chance to rekindle an old romance with Ron. She has a deep emotional depth.

RON
(early-mid 60’s) Male. A drama teacher whose job has been slowly reduced to directing the annual high school musical. Has trouble adjusting when even that is taken away from him. Dependent on the comforts of habit. Warm and funny, but struggles to fully face his pain and resentment, and is in denial about having the possibility of a whole life slip away out of fear. In love with Anne. Guarded but empathetic.

GEORGE
(17) Male. African-American or Latino. Seeking actors 18 and older. A kid who had a very hard childhood, and has been shunted into the foster care system. Struggling with his identity. Angry and having trouble learning how to cope with his fear and anxiety, he is growing up in uncertain circumstances. In desperate need of a sensitive, understanding parent. Over the course of the play, comes out as transgender.

KIM
(30’s) Female. Anne’s neighbor. Someone who’s frustrated at not being able to have the life she planned. Uncomfortable with the idea of adopting, she’s taken in foster children, George being one of two. Struggling with two kids potentially getting into trouble and a dissatisfied husband, and resentful towards a society that has not afforded her the opportunities she feels she deserves.

SAM
(mid 30’s) Male. Anne’s son. A high school chorus teacher who’s been arrested for having a romantic relationship with a student who consented to the romance. Profoundly angry and wounded by what he perceives to be the emotional limitations of both his parents growing up. Trying to make sense of his life and his future, but having trouble figuring out how to do so. Avoids feeling the depth of his pain by attempting to harden himself, but can’t fully eliminate his hurt and longing. There is a damaged and broken quality to him.

ANETTA
(40’s) Female. Polish waitress at Ron’s favorite diner. Fond of Ron, good sense of humor, flirtatious. Most of her emotional life takes place at work, and there is a loneliness underneath her façade of prickly affection. Stand-offish when she feels threatened.

FRANK
(60’s) Male. A down to earth, no-nonense man. Friends with Ron, and relies on him and Anetta for companionship when he needs to get away from home. Rants about taxes and the news as a way of dealing with dissatisfaction. Threatened by Anne’s arrival, though he covers it with humor. Angry as the fact that his town is changing and he is entering the last part of his life.

DETECTIVE
(40’s) MALE. Knows his town well, and has years of experience. Covers over a deep cynicism and anger about human behavior with highly disciplined professionalism.
