Seeking:
[ROMEO] (Male, 20’s-Early 30’s, Any Ethnicity) Son of Montague and Lady Montague. Comes from a middle-class family. He is handsome, intelligent, and sensitive. Romeo may be impulsive and immature, but his idealism and passion make him an extremely likable character. An affectionate, devoted person. Actor must be superb with text and thought. Stage combat experience; certified in knife fighting is preferred.
[JULIET] (Female, 20’s, Any Ethnicity) Daughter of Capulet and Lady Capulet. Come from an Upper-class family. Juliet is a naïve child who has thought little about love but grows up quickly when she falls in love with Romeo. She is a girl with little freedom but much courage. Views love as idealistic and intense. Must be superb with heightened text and thought.
[FRIAR LAWRENCE](Male, 50’s-60’s, Any Ethnicity) A Franciscan friar, friend to both Romeo and Juliet. Kind, civic-minded, and a proponent of moderation. He always has a plan. Friar Lawrence believes his secret decision to marry Romeo and Juliet will heal the familial division and bring peace to the community.
[NURSE] (Female, 40’s, Any Ethnicity) Juliet’s nurse who breast-fed her when she was a baby. A bit vulgar, long-winded, and sentimental. A faithful confidante to Juliet. Views love as earthy and sexual.
[MERCUTIO] (Male, 20’s-Early 30s, Any Ethnicity) Friend to Romeo. He is imaginative, and full of wit. A brooding satirist and a sexual being. He quickly becomes hotheaded and hates pretension. Actor must be superb with text and thought. Stage combat experience; certified in knife fighting is preferred. Ability to sing and play piano a huge plus.
[MONTAGUE] (Male, 50’s, Any Ethnicity) Patriarch of the Montague family. Romeo’s father. Bitter rival to Capulet.
[LADY MONTAGUE] (Female, 40’s-50’s, Any Ethnicity) Romeo’s mother and Montague’s wife. She carries great guilt after Romeo is exiled and dies of grief.
[CAPULET] (Male, 50’s-60’s, Any Ethnicity) Patriarch of the Capulet family. Father of Juliet, and husband to Lady Capulet; enemy for unexplained reason to Montague. He deeply loves his daughter but doesn’t understand her as a person. Prudent, commands respect and propriety; flies into rage easily when disrespected.
[LADY CAPULET] (Female, 40’s, Any Ethnicity) Juliet’s mother and wife to Capulet. She married young and became a young, ineffectual mother. She lacks the ability to provide moral support to her daughter.
[OLD MAN/FRIAR JOHN] (Male, 60’s-70’s, Any Ethnicity) An older friar.
[TYBALT] (Male, 20’s- 30’s, Any Ethnicity) Juliet’s cousin on her mother’s side. Vain, pretentious, prideful, aggressive, violent, and quick to anger. Actor must be superb with text and thought. An excellent fighter. Stage combat experience; certified in knife fighting is preferred
[BENVOLIO] (Male, 20’s, Any Ethnicity) Montague’s nephew, and Romeo’s cousin and thoughtful friend. A genuine person. Benvolio makes every effort to diffuse tension and help Romeo. Stage combat experience; certified in knife fighting is preferred.
[PARIS] (Male, 20’s, Any Ethnicity) A relative to the Prince. Suitor to Juliet. Of noble birth and would make a perfect husband. Presumptuous in his actions. Stage combat experience; certified in knife fighting is preferred.

SEEKING:
[STAGE MANAGER] (Male, 40’s+, Any Ehnicity) Ageless. He loves the town, knows everything about it, and wants to share its joys and heartaches with the audience. He is a magician letting the story unfold.
[GEORGE GIBBS] (Male, 20’s-30’s, Any Ethnicity) Starts play at 16 years of age and ends play in his 30s. A proud man; a lover. At first immature and childish, he grows into a responsible young man with the influence of Emily’s love.
[EMILY WEBB](Female, 20’s- Early 30’s, Any Ethnicity) Starts the play at 16 years old and ends play at 30 years old. Emily is smart and curious. She serves as Wilder’s ideal of romance and innocence. She gives the audience the meaning of life and teaches us the importance of appreciating it.
[DR. GIBBS](Male, Late 40’s-Early 50’s, Any Ethnicity) George’s father. Practical and opinionated. He takes a keen interest in history. He is the dominate figure in the home.
[MRS. GIBBS] (Female, Mid 30’s-40’s, Any Ethnicity) Pleasant, warm. Mother to George and Rebecca. A good cook and oversees her children’s health. She tends to nag her husband who works too hard.
[MR. WEBB](Male, Late 40’s-Early 50’s, Any Ethnicity) Practical and matter-of-fact. He is a leader in the community. He uses homespun philosophy and wry sense of humor with his family to solve problems.
[MRS. WEBB] (Female, Mid 30’s-40’s, Any Ethnicity) Serious, crisp. Mother to Emily and Wally. She provides for her children even after her death.
[SIMON STIMSON] (Male, 30s-50s, Any Ethnicity) The choir teacher and a drinker. Our hearts break when we think of him. He is the organist of the Congregational Church and is the subject of town gossip because of his alcoholism. Simon's memories of the past are negative.
[HOWIE NEWSOME] (Male, Any Age, Any Ethnicity) The cordial milkman who guides a seventeen-year-old horse named Bessie. Howie appears during Emily's return to the past in the last act.
[SAM CRAIG] (Male, 30’s, Any Ethnicity) Adventurous. Left home for the west. The son of Julia Gibbs' sister Carey, he comes back from Buffalo after twelve years' absence. He provides exposition in the last act.
[CONSTABLE WARREN](Male, 60’s, Any Ethnicity) Elderly policeman.

SEEKING:
[TRUVY JONES] (Female, 40’s-50’s, Any Ethnicity) Owner of the beauty shop. Full of energy, she knows everyone’s business and shares it with anyone who will listen. She has a huge heart and in her way, is looking out for all who enter her shop. Truvy is also a dreamer, she lets herself believe that she would like the adventure that another place could bring, but in reality she’s the loyal glue that holds this small family of friends together.
[CLAIREE BELCHER] (Female, 50’s-60’s, African American) Widow of the former mayor of Chinquapin. Bit of the Grande Dame. She is wealthy and also knows everyone’s business. She uses gossip like currency in this town. She loves to laugh and poke fun at the little things that others cry over. She loves the local high school football team, and she has…um….let’s say a bit of a sweet tooth.
[SHELBY EATENTON-LATCHERIE] (Female, Mid 20’s, Any Ethnicity) A diabetic young lady, who is very much her mother’s daughter. Folks say that she’s the prettiest girl in town, and she is, but she’s so much more. She’s smart, confident, has an absolute sense of who she is, and loves being the center of every room that she’s in. She has a great sense of humor and revels in the power of youth. Hungry for life, and wants to make her own mistakes. She aspires to her mother’s toughness, but rebels against her protection. Her own vulnerability frustrates her.
[M’LYNN EATENTON] (Female, 50’s, Any Ethnicity) Mother of Shelby. She is over-protective at times and finds the need to have a firm grasp on the world at all times. She is a busy woman who worries too much for her age, never gossips, and wants what is best for her family. One suspects that she was Shelby when she was younger and, now tries to use her experience to save Shelby from making the same mistakes. M’Lynn is the pillar of support for others but hasn’t had to reach out for support for herself very often. She keeps a tight council (will not gossip), and possesses much of the steel in the play’s title, until her daughter’s death cracks her.

Seeking:
[CELESTE FIELDING] (Female, 50’s, Caucasian) Celeste is the diva of the Montgomery theatre community. She’s played all the leading roles of the stage and though she has passed ingénue stage, she still sees herself as much younger. She questions everything Maggie does to produce the plays. Ultimately, she plays Henry the Fifth and Fourth.
[ELLSWORTH SNOW] (Male, 60’s, Caucasian) Ellsworth is the Board President of the Oberon Play House in Montgomery, AL. He’s a successful, retired businessman who has no time for the escapades of “artists.” He’s continually frustrated with Maggie and her vision to produce the shows with only women; he thinks the audience will boo them off the stage. He loves to golf but loves his wife Winifred more and will do anything for her, including arriving in drag in the last scene of the play.
[WINIFRED SNOW] (Female, 50’s, Caucasian) Untalented but enthusiastic socialite married to Ellsworth. To gain Ellsworth’s support of the productions, Maggie enlists Winifred as a performer in the shows. What Winnifred lacks in talent she makes up for in spirit and sweetness. With much effort, she finally “finds her character” as Falstaff. Starts off as Margaret DuMont type and transforms into a Groucho Marx type. Must be able to perform a Groucho Marx impersonation.
[IDA GREEN] (Female, 40’s-50’s, African American) Ida is the imaginative costume designer for the playhouse. She is a behind-the-scenes player until the moment requires her to take a stand and play a role. She confides in Stuart her experience as an African American woman in Montgomery, and she is a source of comfort to many of the women in the show. She plays Hotspur.
[JUNE BENNET] (Female, 20’s, Caucasian) June is the ingénue. Full of energy and spunk, she misses her husband terribly and naively believes he will be home soon from the war. June learns many life lessons in the rehearsal process. She plays the Kates.
