A CHRISTMAS STORY adapted by Philip Grecian. Based on the iconic motion picture and collected stories of the same name. Jean Shepherd’s hilarious memoir of growing up in the Midwest of the 1940s follows the quest of Young Ralphie to get his heart’s desire for Christmas: a Red Ryder BB gun. The tale chronicles the life of an eccentric working-class family as told through the eyes of Ralph, the young Ralphie grown up: articulate and immensely insightful and funny.
Seeking
Ralph: (40s-50s) Ralphie grown up. Comedic, versatile and warm, Ralph is the character who takes us into the world of the play. Actor must be very comfortable speaking and relating to the audience, vocally and physically versatile to play several parts in the story; funny, droll, and a keen observer who sees the humor in human foibles.
The “Old Man”: (40s) Ralphie’s dad. Blue collar, good provider who is genuinely eccentric. Can seem harsh on the exterior, but inside, he loves his family and wishes that life had more possibility. He accepts that they have meatloaf and cabbage every night, but yearns for a little bit more. Deep down, he loves Christmas – maybe because they eat turkey. Obsessed with contests and the promise of great prizes. He thinks of the broken-down furnace in the cellar as his personal challenge. Needs great comic timing –by playing it straight. Quirky and Funny, think: a slightly edgier dad from “Malcolm in the Middle.”
