Breakdown
The Spellers: Chip Tolentino (also plays Jesus) – relatively athletic and social; needs to sing “high notes a lot of times” Logainne Schwartzandgrubenniere – Younger than most bee participants, she is a little uncomfortable in her body, has some tics (she lisps), but manges to strike a strong presence. Leaf Coneybear (also plays Carl dad) - may have ADD but “delights in his own wandering focus”. William Barfee (pronounced “barfay”) – “He is the fat kid who becomes the bully”, with lots of health problems and “a lot to prove”. Marcy Park – multi-talented, driven student, from a family that expects excellence Olive Ostrovsky – an only child with often-absent parents, she begins tremendously shy, but blossoms at the end. The Adults: Rona Lisa Perretti (also plays Olive’s mom) – has been hostess of the bee for years after winning the 3rd annual one. “She keeps the bee running smoothly, upholds protocol, and conveys crucial information to the audience”. Vice-Principal Douglas Panch – frustrated with his life, he fell into education because he has no particular passion; he got the call this morning to be the substitute caller at the bee. Mitch Mahoney (also plays Dan Dad and Olive’s dad) – a bouncer’s physique and demeanor, it’s part of his community service sentence to be the bee’s “comfort counselor”.
