Des Moines Playhouse & Iowa Juneteenth Observance Present CROWNS 5/15

The Des Moines Playhouse and Iowa Juneteenth Observance present "Crowns" for two performances only, May 13 and May 15. Tickets may be purchased at The Playhouse ticket office, by phone at 515-277-6261, and online at www.dmplayhouse.com.

There is a hat for every occasion, from flirting to churchgoing to funerals to baptisms. "Crowns" is a moving musical in which hats are used to explore Black history and identity, as well as the history and social function of hats. At the heart of "Crowns" is a young African-American girl from Brooklyn, visiting her grandmother in South Carolina, who is trying to figure out her identity, her place in the world, and her place in her own culture.

The "Crowns" cast features Timothy Tate, Odell McGhee, Kain Wilson, Sasha Davis, Tenelle M. Russ, Donna Scarfe, DeShana Langford, and Celeste Wilson. "Crowns" is directed by Ruth Ann Gaines, with music direction by Timothy Tate and choreography by JoAnn Hughes.

The Playhouse is Iowa's oldest and largest producing theatre. Located at the 42nd Street exit of I-235, the theatre has presented a full season of shows since 1919 and also offers a wide variety of educational experiences including classes for ages 4 to adult, theatre trips to New York, and volunteer opportunities onstage and backstage.

The Iowa Juneteenth Observance, celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, educates Iowans on, and promotes the historical significance of, the Juneteenth holiday in our state; and commemorates the end to slavery in America.
