Des Moines Community Playhouse Presents STILL LIFE, Closes 2/13

By:

The Des Moines Community Playhouse presents the new drama "Still Life," Jan. 28- Feb. 13, 2011. Tickets may be purchased at The Playhouse ticket office, 831 42nd St.; by phone at 515-277-6261; and online at dmplayhouse.com. "Still Life" is sponsored by The Des Moines Register.

"Still Life" is the story of photographer Carrie Ann (Liz Peterson), whose creative ability inexplicably shuts down at the pinnacle of her career. Lost, and afraid to pick up a camera, her sudden descent is interrupted by a whirlwind romance with Jeff (Gabe Thompson), a trend analyst who becomes determined to help her move on, even while facing his own uncertain future. The Playhouse cast also features Eric Lee, Anita Holland, Sherryl Viars, Rusk Dorsett, Britt Slater, and Jerry Eisenhour.

The Playhouse will be presenting the first production of the show in the United States outside the New York area. John Viars, Playhouse executive director and the director of "Still Life," saw the show in October 2010. "I was moved by the depth of emotion, contemporary feel, and fascinating characters," said Viars.

Critics called "Still Life" "the best new American play since 'Proof'" (Bloomberg News) and "an absorbing and moving look at living fully" (Curtain Up). The New York Times said "'Still Life' is rather like its characters, camouflaging and betraying its essential seriousness with flippancy, and that tension holds your interest."

"Still Life" is by two-time Drama Desk nominee Alexander Dinelaris. Viars, who has been in conversation with the playwright, said, "Alex is an important new voice in American theatre. His work is vibrant, fresh, challenging, and heart-wrenching." The AP said of Dinelaris, "his intelligent dialogue is concise and witty... thought-provoking."

"Still Life" is rated R for language and adult situations.

The Playhouse is Iowa's oldest and largest producing theatre. Located at the 42nd Street exit of I-235, the theatre has presented a full season of shows since 1919 and also offers a wide variety of educational experiences including classes for ages 4 to adult, theatre trips to New York, and volunteer opportunities onstage and backstage.
