Have you ever wondered what makes a kite fly or a boat float? Have you ever thought about why snowflakes are symmetrical, or why golf balls have dimples? Have you ever tried to make a kaleidoscope or build a pair of stilts?

World-renowned autism spokesperson, scientist, and inventor Temple Grandin explores the answers to all these questions and more in her new book for young readers, Calling All Minds: How to Think and Create Like an Inventor (on sale May 15; ages 8-12). In this hands-on, fun-filled, thought-provoking book about invention and innovation, Grandin shares more than 20 of her personal childhood projects that started her on her road to becoming a scientist, inventor, and engineer, along with step-by-step instructions for kids to re-create them. With mini-histories of groundbreaking inventions and mini-biographies of the inventors who created them, Temple shows readers why, in a world of virtual learning, working with your hands is a life-changing experience.
