Not Quite Heaven

By Joan Golden

Directed by Jim O'Leary

(Denver, CO) The Colorado Theatre Guild presents the next installment in an ongoing FREE series to showcase new works by Colorado playwrights.

"Not Quite Heaven" by Joan Golden will be presented in a staged reading directed by Jim O'Leary at the Avenue Theater, 417 E. 17th St. on Tuesday, April 14 at 7:30 p.m.

When divorced loner Jack is hit by a car at the only intersection in Chew Creek, Texas, he vows to go sit on the billboard until the town council will hear his argument for a stop light. The mayor, Vengie - who's Jack's ex-wife - wants him down, but Jack gains support, dividing the town. Up on the billboard, he forges friendships and makes enemies, but finally, Jack realizes he must rise above his own problems with Vengie in order to come down and heal Chew Creek.

The cast includes Bevin Antea, John Crumply, Beth Foster, Christopher Goetz, Jeff Miller, Peggy Miller, Steve Seaholm and Suzanna Wellens.

Joan Golden did her graduate work in Theatre and Journalism at the University of Colorado. Her stage play, "Not Quite Heaven", took 3rd prize this year in the McLaren National Comedy Contest, and "The Half World" was a finalist in the Lake County (CA) Repertory Theatre competition in 2004. Her most recent screenplay, "Stealing First", won third place in StoryPros' screenwriting contest last year. She also writes for television and magazines.

"Not Quite Heaven" is presented FREE to the public and will be followed by a talkback with the author and cast.

The New Venture Series is dedicated to Al Brooks and Maxine Munt, who in 1968 founded Denver's influential performance venue The Changing Scene, providing a stage for locally and nationally-created original works, and operated it until the theatre's closure in 2000.
