I Disappear is now running at the Det KGL. Teater in Denmark, through June 4, 2021.

Anchored in the refugee crisis, Norwegian playwright Arne Lygre's play I Disappear shows how fragile life becomes when security is threatened, and relationships are lost.

Who am I when everything around me is unfamiliar? Internationally acclaimed Norwegian playwright Arne Lygre examines this question in I Disappear. The play unerringly finds its mark against the backdrop of an important contemporary theme - the refugee crisis, where the frailty of modern humanity is depicted as a stirring game of broken identities.

A woman is forced to flee from the safety of everyday life with her friend and grown-up daughter, leaving behind her husband, who has vanished without trace. While crossing the ocean, the three women are separated and the mother ultimately finds herself alone among complete strangers in unfamiliar territory.

As a survival strategy, the people describe the fates of those worse off than themselves. We recognise the images of individuals caught among the ruins of bombed-out buildings, refugees at sea in makeshift boats, and people held captive begging for help.

With her modern narrative form, the resident director of the Royal Danish Playhouse, Sigrid Strøm Reibo, who, like Lygre, is a leading light in Norwegian theatre, creates a vibrantly intense play that explores in-depth psychological and physical escape.
