Wesport Country Playhouse Presents Margulies' DINNER WITH FRIENDS, 6/1-6/19

By: Jan. 28, 2010

From June 1-19 David Kennedy will direct the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Donald Margulies, DINNER WITH FRIENDS, at The Westport Country Playhouse.

The play tells the story of Gabe and Karen, a happily married middle-aged couple who have been friends with Tom and Beth, another married couple, for many years. Gabe and Karen fixed up their friends in the first place. While having dinner at Gabe and Karen's home one night, Beth tearfully reveals that she is getting a divorce from Tom, who has been unfaithful and the story unfolds.

DINNER WITH FRIENDS opened Off-Broadway in New York on November 4, 1999. Aside from winning the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the play also received the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Off-Broadway Play, the Dramatists Guild/Hull-Warriner Award, the Outer Critics Circle Award, the American Theatre Critics Association New Play Award, and a Drama Desk Award nomination.

The play was adapted into a 2001 TV movie starring Dennis Quaid as Gabe, Andie MacDowell as Karen, Greg Kinnear as Tom, and Toni Collette as Beth. It was nominated for two Emmys, including Outstanding Made for Television Movie.

Margulies' other works include Time Stands Still (2009), Shipwrecked! An Entertainment - The Amazing Adventures of Louis de Rougemont (As Told by Himself) (2007), Brooklyn Boy (2004), Sight Unseen (1991) and Collected Stories (1996) all of which were commissioned and originally produced by South Coast Repertory. Sight Unseen and Collected Stories were also both finalists for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Currently, his new play TIME STANDS STILL is playing on Broadway.
