The Hartt School celebrates the retirement of long-time trumpet professor Roger Murtha with a celebration concert featuring the American Brass Quintet. This celebration of Murtha's 45 year tenure at the University of Hartford will take place on Friday, October 30, at 7:30 PM, in Millard Auditorium on the University of Hartford's West Hartford campus.

In addition to his years of teaching at The Hartt School, Murtha earned three degrees from Hartt: A Bachelor of Music in 1960, a Bachelor of Music Education in 1961, and a Master of Music in 1962. While he was a student, he taught in the Hartt School Community Division, where he took trumpet lessons as a youngster. He went on to teach at the collegiate level, becoming a full-time faculty member in 1964. Murtha also spent 47 years playing trumpet with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra. Murtha retired from teaching in the spring.

The American Brass Quintet, featuring Roger's former student Raymond Mase and Hartt's current trumpet teacher, Kevin Cobb, joins the Hartt Wind Ensemble in this performance. The concert will feature the music of Gregson, Grainger, Ewazen, along with music by Hartt faculty members Steven Gryc, Robert Carl, Kenneth Steen, Larry Alan Smith and David Macbride. Hartt's new Dean, Aaron Flagg, will be the featured trumpet soloist in Stephen Gryc's Evensong.

Admission is $20 with discounts for seniors, students, and groups. Visit www.hartford.edu/hartt or call 860.768.4228 for tickets and information.
