Stevenson has been presenting solo concerts for double bass with electronics since his 2005 debut in Warsaw. The music has evolved from mostly improvised pieces to longer, composed works that are difficult to categorize in a musical style; some have compared it to modern classical, new, experimental, film, ambient, or music inspired by nature. The Hartt Graduate Percussion Group presents an evening of chamber music, featuring Frederic Rzewski's landmark Les Moutons de Panurge (for mallet-keyboard percussion and piano), Hartt alumnus Stuart Saunders Smith's Two for Four (for an array of instruments, including boatswain's whistle, bottles, and wind chimes), and Nebojsa Jovan Zivkovic's Trio Per Uno (for an assortment of drums, gongs, and cymbals). The Hartt School presents a violin masterclass with Sibbi Bernhardsson on Saturday, April 3, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM in Berkman RecitAl Hall. As a member of The Pacifica Quartet, Violinist Sibbi Bernhardsson performs more than 90 concerts annually around the world. He has performed in some of the most prestigious concert venues including The Wigmore Hall, Consertgebouw in Amsterdam, The Edinburgh Festival, Alice Tully Hall, Carnegie Hall, Music@Menlo, Dai Seimei Hall in Tokyo, and others. He has performed with Yo Yo Ma, Menahem Pressler, The Emerson String Quartet, Wu Han, and members of the Guarneri and Cleveland Quartets. His awards include a 2009 Grammy Award for best performance in Chamber music, an Avery Fisher Career Grant, The Cleveland Quartet Award, and the Icelandic Lindar Award. Bernhardsson is on the Faculty at University of Illinois, an Artist-in-Residence at University of Chicago, and at the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, MA. Admission is free. The Hartt School presents Framing War Through Music and Poetry on Tuesday, April 6, at 7:30 PM in Berkman RecitAl Hall. Join Larry Alan Smith, Professor of Composition at The Hartt School, for the premiere and a discussion of his newest work, a war-related piece, performed by Hartt faculty member Cherie Caluda, soprano. Smith, who will accompany Caluda on piano, has been named a Faculty Fellow for 2010. The Fellowship, and this year's Humanities Center Seminar, themed "Framing War," support the development of this composition during the spring semester. Admission is free. The Hartt School presents a masterclass and concert with master pianist Harold Mabern on Wednesday, April 7, at 7:30 PM in Millard Auditorium. Mr. Mabern will perform a solo piano concert, and also will perform with Hartt students and faculty. The Hartt School presents The Importance of Being Earnest Thursday, April 8, through Saturday, April 10, at 7:30 PM, and Sunday, April 11, at 3:00 PM, in the Edward T. and Ann C. Roberts Foundation Theater at the Mort and Irma Handel Performing Arts Center, 35 Westbourne Parkway, Hartford. Set in London and the English countryside during the late 19th century, The Importance of Being Earnest is Oscar Wilde's classic romantic comedy of fun and games, alter-egos, and dubious ethics among the British upper crust. Directed by Malcolm Morrison, this sharp-witted satire of Victorian society tells the tale of friends Algernon Moncrieff and Jack Worthing, Jack's lovely ward Cecily, Algernon's cousin Gwendolyn, Gwendolyn's mother Lady Bracknell, and their collective exploits. Just who is in love with who? How will Lady Bracknell handle the matter of her daughter Gwendolyn's suitors? And what's the truth about Jack's mysterious heritage?

The Hartt School Presents a Masterclass in Double Bass with Tim Cobb*
The Hartt School presents a masterclass with Tim Cobb on Monday, April 19, from 2:30 PM to 5:00 PM in Room 163 of the Fuller Music Center. Tim Cobb is Principal Bass for the Metropolitan Opera and Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestras, and a former member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He is on the faculty of the Sarasota Music Festival, and has participated in numerous chamber music festivals worldwide. A former participant in the Marlboro Music Festival, he has recorded on several CDs with the Harmonie Ensemble, including L'histoire du soldat (2003 Grammy nominee) and all Met recordings since 1985. Cobb serves on the faculties of the Manhattan School of Music and Conservatory of Music, Purchase College. Admission is free.

The Hartt School Presents Into the Woods
The Hartt School presents Into the Woods Wednesday, April 21, through Friday, April 23, at 7:30 PM; Saturday, April 24, at 2:00 PM and 7:30 PM; and Sunday, April 25, at 2:00 PM, in the Kent McCray Theater at the Mort and Irma Handel Performing Arts Center, 35 Westbourne Parkway, Hartford. Once upon a time, there was a wildly successful Broadway musical called Into The Woods, with music and lyrics by Broadway living legend Stephen Sondheim and book by the acclaimed James Lapine. The plots of several Brothers Grimm fairy tales are intertwined in surprising ways, as a mysterious narrator guides us through the story of a Baker and his wife, their quest to begin a family, and the many well-known characters they encounter along the way. Cinderella, Little Red Ridinghood, Jack and the Beanstock, Rapunzel, and other well-known characters learn many life lessons along the way. The Hartt School Presents the Hartt Wind Ensemble and Symphony Band
The Hartt School presents the Hartt Wind Ensemble and Symphony Band on Friday, April 23, at 7:30 PM in Millard Auditorium. This pre-Carnegie Hall performance will feature a world premiere preview performance by the celebrated composer Chen Yi. This composition is the first installment of works commissioned by the National Wind Ensemble Consortium Group, which was formed by Hartt Director of Bands Glen Adsit. Also on the program will be an incredible new composition by Hartt composition student Jess Turner. Written for wind ensemble, Rumpelstilzchen is a wonderful addition to the wind ensemble library. The Symphony Band's final concert of the 2009-2010 season features many guest artists. Graduate student Melanie Guerin will conduct David Maslanka's Tears on her final concert. Dr. Warren Haston will conduct John Barnes Chance's Incantation and Dance. Hartt tuba professor Scott Mendoker is featured on David Holsinger's Kansas City Dances, and conductor Matthew Aubin will conclude the Symphony Band half of the program with John Mackey's Turbine.
