Playhouse On Park To Offer Sensory-Friendly Performances Of POLKADOTS: THE COOL KIDS MUSICAL Sponsored By The Miracle League Of CT

The Miracle League of CT is will partner with Playhouse on Park in offering two special sensory-friendly performances of Polkadots: The Cool Kids Musical on Friday, May 18 at 10am, and Saturday, May 19 at 10am. All tickets will be specially priced at $5 for these performances only, all seats reserved.

The Miracle League of CT offers opportunities for children with sensory issues and other special needs to enjoy educational and cultural activities. The Miracle League of CT is, additionally, the official and Primary Sponsor for Playhouse on Park's 2017-2018 Young Audience Series.

The Polkadots sensory friendly performance will be a welcoming and inclusive place for families to engage in live theater in the following ways: eliminating startling sounds when at all possible, keeping the lights at a low level throughout the show, providing a respite area in the lobby for those who may need a break, and giving the option of talking during the performance.

Inspired by Civil Rights pioneers Ruby Bridges and The Little Rock Nine, Polkadots: The Cool Kids Musical serves as a colorful history lesson for the world, reminding us that our differences make us awesome, not outcasts. Polkadots follows 8-year-old Lily Polkadot who just moved to the "Squares Only" small town of Rockaway. As the first Polkadot in an all Square school, Lily faces an almost impossible task of gaining acceptance from her peers. From daily bullying, to segregated drinking fountains, Lily's quest seems hopeless until she meets Sky, a shy Square boy whose curiosity for her unique polkadot skin blooms into an unexpected pal-ship. Professional actors bring this fun story, based on the book by Melvin Tunstall III, to life. The Playhouse production of Polkadots is directed by its lyricist and Hartt School Graduate, Douglas Lyons.

School groups are welcome to come to the theater through our Literature Alive program. As part of the student's field trip to the theater for a matinee, the Playhouse also provides: a study guide to prepare students for the production, a professional from the Playhouse to lead a workshop for students, and a meet and greet with the cast after the show. Teachers and paraprofessionals attend the trip for free!
