Miriam Margolyes To Perform DICKENS' WOMEN at The Yale Center for British Art, 11/7

By:

The Yale Center for British Art is pleased to announce that the award-winning British stage and screen actress Miriam Margolyes will perform her celebrated production of DICKENS' WOMEN on Wednesday, November 7 at 6 pm. Margolyes is the winner of a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) award and has appeared in The Age of Innocence, Blackadder, and the Harry Potter films. Wei-yi Yang, internationally acclaimed pianist and associate professor of piano at the Yale School of Music, will accompany on piano with music contemporary to Dickens’ time. The program is part of an ongoing celebration of the bicentenary of Charles Dickens’s birth across Yale University.

Portraying twenty-three of Dickens’ best-loved characters, Margolyes sets out to discover the author, revealing the raucous humor of his characterizations as well as the darker, more sinister aspects of his life and work. Developed by Margolyes and Sonia Fraser for the 1989 Edinburgh Festival, DICKENS' WOMEN has since traveled worldwide to London, Jerusalem, Santa Cruz, New York, Boston, Sydney, Auckland, and across India, among other places. In 1992, DICKENS' WOMEN was nominated for the prestigious Olivier Award. Admission to the November 7 performance is free, but registration is required. Please call 203-627-2001. This program is made possible through the generous support of the Terry F. Green 1969 Fund for British Art and Culture.

Early in 1842, on the eve of his 30th birthday, Charles Dickens made his first trip to America. Writing of his journey in American Notes, Dickens mentioned the “fine town” of New Haven and described Yale College as “an establishment of considerable eminence and reputation.” Both the Yale Center for British Art and the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale have robust collections of material related to Dickens, including art objects, rare book editions, and memorabilia on his life and fiction.
