Contemporary singer/songwriters Ingrid Michaelson and Eric Hutchinson come to Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts, on Thursday, March 4 at 8 p.m. in a show that is both personal and powerful.

Ingrid Michaelson, who trained in music and voice, graduated from Binghamton University with a degree in theater and became a director until she decided to pursue a musical career. Her music has been featured on such popular TV shows as Scrubs, Grey's Anatomy and One Tree Hill, as well as in Old Navy's Fair Isle ad campaign. In 2008, she opened for Jason Mraz on his European tour.

Michaelson has performed live on ABC's Good Morning America, Live with Regis and Kelly and Last Call with Carson Daly, and has appeared on VH1, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and NPR. Variety's Steve Mirkin says she is "the latest performer to gain prominence through MySpace, and her emotionally unguarded songs, sung in a wry, little girl voice not unlike Regina Spektor, could be blog entries set to music. Tunes such as "Breakable" and "The Hat" (from her self-released Girls and Boys) are discursive looks at relationships, doting on the color of a hat or the crunch of the snow."

Eric Hutchinson combines Michaelson's fresh vocals with the classic pop feel of the Bee Gees. He fuses divergent styles into a sound he alone owns, with vocals that veer from a gritty growl to a shimmering falsetto. The Washington Post calls him "undeniably charismatic, splitting his time between keyboard and guitar, crooning about stormy romances and everyday struggles."

Hutchinson first began performing in public at performing arts-oriented Emerson College in downtown Boston. Between the influential campus radio station and the thriving local singer/songwriter scene, the guitarist and pianist found enough of an audience for his folk- and jazz-inflected pop style to move to Los Angeles and make a career of it.

Hutchinson is proud of the "raw, vintage vibe" of his latest album, Sounds Like This, which includes the hit singles "Rock & Roll," "OK," "It's Alright With Me" and "Oh!" The album won praise from gossip blogger Perez Hilton, and that one mention on one of the world's most popular websites sent Sounds Like This into the Top Ten most downloaded albums on iTunes, peaking at #5, and to #1 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart.

Enjoy Ingrid Michaelson and Eric Hutchinson at Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts, 2132 Hillside Road on the UConn campus in Storrs. Regular tickets: $10, $15, $20 and $25; UConn students (with ID): $8, $10, $15, and $20.
