TheaterWorks (Rob Ruggiero, Producing Artistic Director) announced today that FADE the 4th show of TheaterWorks 31st Season will run June 1 through June 30, 2017 (please note date correction).
Directed by Jerry Ruiz, FADE is a sharply written comedic drama by acclaimed playwright and screenwriter Tanya Saracho (Mala Hierba, writer, co-producer of ABC's How to Get Away with Murder, HBO's Girls).
In this provocative Hollywood drama, Mexican-American Lucia is hired to write for a Latina TV character in a cutthroat male dominated TV studio. She quickly discovers that the Latino studio custodian, Abel, has a windfall of plot ideas. As their friendship grows, his stories start to blur with hers with unexpected consequences.
Lucia is a young novelist, newly hired to write for a TV detective series. She struggles to find her place among a team of domineering white male co-workers. Abel is one of the studio's janitors. He's kind to Lucia, empathetic and generous with his opinions and personal anecdotes. During one late night exchange, Abel opens up about his life, his struggles and a life-changing incident. Lucia's response puts into question their friendship, her sincerity and how the authenticity of culture and self can fade in the bright lights of show business.
TheaterWorks Producing Associate and FADE's Associate Director Taneisha Duggan said "I found this play on the 2015 Kilroy's list, my go to place when I'm looking for new plays written by women. I dug the script because it took on a latinx story, which I thought was important considering the make-up of Hartford. What made it personal for me was the story of a woman of color building her career and the choices - good and bad - one makes in service of their ambitions."
Elizabeth Ramos makes her TheaterWorks debut in the role of Lucia a talented and ambitious young screenwriter. Liz has been seen previously Off Broadway at the Cherry Lane Theatre in The Surgeon and her Daughters and The Idea of Me. Eddie Martinez makes his TheaterWorks debut as Abel the office janitor who befriends Lucia in the workplace. Eddie originated the role in Denver and was featured in the New York premiere at Primary Stages.
The creative team includes Mariana Sanchez (Set Design), Harry Nadal (Costume Design), Amith Chandrashaker (Lighting Design), and M.L. Dogg (Sound Design).
