Actors' Theatre of Columbus Announces 2013 Events

By:

Now in its thirty-second year, the award-winning Actors' Theatre of Columbus (ATC) will be offering a little something for everyone during its spring and summer season.

First up is The Crucible, by American playwright Arthur Miller. This play, which is being performed in conjunction with the Columbus School for Girls (CSG), is a dramatization of the infamous Salem witch trials that took place 1692 and 1693. Performance dates are: February 28 and March 1, 2, and 3, 2013 at CSG.

"This the second year we have performed with the Columbus School for Girls, and we are very pleased to be working with them again," according to John S. Kuhn, Artistic Director for ATC. Kuhn will be co-directing the play with Janetta Davis, the school's Theatre Director.

Next, the action moves to the Schiller Park Amphitheatre in historic German Village, where the season runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.

King Arthur and the Sword of Britain, a tale of adventure by local playwright Philip J. Hickman, will run from May 23 to June 23. "This is the second play we have performed by Hickman. Last year's production of Robin Hood routinely drew our biggest audiences and we expect King Arthur will do just as well--or better. Hickman is a talented playwright and we are lucky to be able to work with him. His treatment of the timeless folklore story of Camelot will appeal to all age groups."

Starting on June 27 and running through July 28, ATC will be performing Twelfth Night, one of Shakespeare's most popular, lightest, and most musical of all his comedies. As Kuhn puts it: "The focus is on mistaken identities, ambition, pining lovers, and plenty of mischief-what could be better?"

The Schiller season ends with a production of Beaux Stratagem, a comedy by George Farquhar, adapted by Thornton Wilder and adapted again by Ken Ludwig. The play runs from August 1 to September 1. First performed in 1707, this is a story about two young gentlemen who fall on hard times and whose various plots to recover their wealth lead to misadventure-and love. Kuhn says, "It is a fun play. Ludwig is the playwright for some of our most popular plays, including The Three Musketeers and Treasure Island. Our audience will love Beaux Stratagem."

Kuhn points out that, as always, all the productions are free. "We are pleased that we are able to continue to offer our summer productions at no charge. However, we strongly encourage attendees to make donations to support our efforts. Donations remain an important income source for our continuing sustainability."
