NPR radio personality, author and performance artist Joe Frank returns to Steppenwolf Theatre for one night only with his new show Too Close To Home featuring noted guitarist James Harrah and directed by ensemble member Terry Kinney on Monday, October 10, 2011 at 7:30 pm in the Steppenwolf Downstairs Theatre, 1650 N. Halsted St. Tickets go on sale to the public Friday, September 16 at 11 am.
Following last year's sold-out performance of Just An Ordinary Man, Joe Frank returns to Steppenwolf's with an all new evening of spoken word and music. Too Close to Home, arguably Frank's most intimate piece for the stage to date, reveals his conflicted relationship with his parents as he recounts his visit with them in a Florida retirement community. Through his unique lens, Frank shines a light on feelings many of us experience with those closest to us: love, empathy, understanding, revulsion, rage, panic, and at times the desire to flee. Moving and funny, uncomfortable and ironic, Too Close to Home offers, once again, a starkly frank perspective.Joe Frank's weekly one-hour radio show airs in Chicago on WBEZ Sunday nights at 11 pm. He began his radio career in 1977 at WBAI in New York and later served as co-anchor of NPR's All Things Considered in 1978. Over the last three decades he has produced more than 200 radio programs for KCRW and National Public Radio. A Guggenheim Fellow, Frank has been honored with many major industry awards, including the George Foster Peabody Award, two Major Armstrong Awards and two Corporation for Public Broadcasting Awards for Radio Drama. Over the years, Frank's distinctive approach to making radio has inspired producers around the world to experiment with and stretch the medium beyond traditional boundaries.
