Deep Dish Book Club to Discuss THE INNOCENTS ABROAD 11/2

Deep Dish Theater Company invites you to join a lively, informal discussion of Mark Twain's The Innocents Abroad, or The New Pilgrims' Progress at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 2, at Flyleaf Books of Chapel Hill. The conversation, led by Dr. Evelyn Daniel, is presented in conjunction with the theater's production of Is He Dead?, Mark Twain's farce about art and life, adapted by David Ives.

It is free and open to the public, with no prior attendance or registration is required.

Published in 1869, The Innocents Abroad, or The New Pilgrims' Progress is a humorous chronicle of Mark Twain's 1867 steamship voyage to Europe, Egypt and the Holy Land, based on letters he wrote to newspapers. Part serious travel book and part honest reaction to the foreign scenes before his eyes, Twain critiques the various aspects of culture and society he witnesses on his trip in what became the best selling of his works during his lifetime.

Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835-1910), best known by his pen name, Mark Twain, was a popular American author and satirist. His keen wit and sharp writing struck a chord with Americans, earning him praise as "the father of American literature" by William Faulkner. Twain's novels The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885) remain popular choices for student reading lists today.
Flyleaf Books is a full-service, community-oriented independent bookstore, locally-owned by three long-time Chapel Hillians with a love and knowledge of books, a commitment to providing stellar customer service, and experience in the book trade. With every play it produces, Deep Dish Theater offers an accompanying Book Selection designed to broaden and enhance the theater-going experience. Readers are invited to discuss the book on an online blog and attend an informal meeting that is free and open to the public, traditionally held prior to a designated performance of the current production.
