A dead newborn is found at a convent and the mother - a naive, unworldly novitiate - insists the infant was a virgin birth. Dr. Martha Livingstone is assigned to the case and clashes with the Mother Superior who, expounding on the possibilities of miracles, adamantly wants the investigation dropped. Martha covers the full gamut of emotion
during the investigation - from nurturer to antagonist, from hard-nosed
court psychiatrist to faith searching healer.

substitute for the love of another human being and if so, what is the price exacted?
